Are You Afraid Of Success?

We often talk about releasing the fear of failure to create motivation and momentum, but I’ve found that there’s another obstacle that can keep us from taking risks: the fear of success.

Success in any pursuit requires responsibility. At one point, I decided this was one thing I didn’t want. I didn’t want people to depend on me. I didn’t want to create conditions in my life that I needed to maintain with consistency, both in effort and earning.

I wanted the freedom to drop everything in a heartbeat so that I never had to feel trapped. This felt safe to me. If I never chose to rise too high, I’d never have to fall too far if I messed up; I’d never had to worry about disappointing anyone; and I’d never have to consider that maybe I didn’t deserve any attention or acclaim I might receive.

Perhaps you can relate. Maybe a part of you feels resistant to the changes that might ensue if you advance professionally or personally. Maybe you’re afraid that you’re not good enough, which makes you want to sabotage yourself when opportunity arises. Or maybe you just plain don’t want things to be any different than they are now.

If the last one is true—you truly don’t want to lose the weight, or be in a successful relationship - either be with your family, friends or a romantic one, or get the job, or start the business, or whatever it is that success might mean to someone else—then you’re in a good place. You’re not afraid of success; you’re simply content with the way things are.

But if you are scared, and somewhere inside you a quiet voice is begging for growth, you owe it to yourself to question what’s really holding you back.

We all deserve to live lives that feel passionate and purposeful. And the world needs for us to find the courage to do the things we want to do—not because we’re chasing success, but because we want to make a difference, and we know we deserve and can handle whatever that entails.

My success is learning and writing every day. What is success to you—and are you going for it?

@ Lisa - Thank you for taking the time to read. Wishing you a great week and successfull week as well.

@ Pam - In my case I've seen my family fall apart because of power, money and success on their fields when I was still very young. Throughout my life I've seen many people who have lost themselves in pursuit of those same things. They've lost their passions, their trust, faith, love, beliefs, laugh, joy and honesty to themselves and others, all for a hand full of shiny coins, or a name on the newspaper, or a polished appearance to impress people who really don't care for them. I've seen people who says words they never meant, people who live a life build upon a sandy foundation on a beach shore. They can't relax, or close their eyes and enjoy the breeze, or laugh out loud, cry or love with passion. The castle of cards their lifes have become can fall apart with the slightest breeze.

Off course there are also the ones who were born with plenty and have been used and abused by many, and ended up messing up everything, as we see on E everysingle day (hence Charlie C.)or closed themselves on a shell, so no one can hurt them again. They became prisioners of their own power, posessions and success.

All of that made me believe that having money and being successfull would represent to loose myself, my soul, my happines, the joy for life, the laugh and the freedom I've fought so much to have. All in order to keep appearances and other people's expectation and misconceptions.

My turning point was realizing that I, now know, that possessions, power, fame, money are just temporary and they can be used for common good rather than my own good. For me nothing in this world is worth of loosing myself. I've learned that the important things in life have no price, not because someone didn't think about tagging them with a price tag, but because there is nothing with enough value - individually or combined - that can reflect the preciosity of the small things we take for granted every minute of our lives just because they are free. I now know the secret, and I can go on achieving it without letting it corrupt my soul, my mind, my character, personality and mostly important, my heart.

About my aspirations: I have many, but the gold goes to... finally publish a book I have written and has been on my hard disk for over a year now, then move to a quiet place on a beach in the tropics and spend the rest of my life writing about things and people I've met and the wonderful experiences I've lived and learned with and from them. Thank you for stopping by.
