I grew up in what was at the time a small town and my parents always donated to the local fire department. We never had to call them for anything thankfully but, my Mom always looked at it from the view that they are volunteering and risking their lives the least I can do is contribute. I started donating to Franconia Volunteer Fire Company after I settled and purchased my house. I know that times are tight for a lot of people but, every penny counts. Take $5.00 for example, if everyone gave that amount it would make a huge difference. I was just speaking to one of my neighbors and he was expressing his guilt for never donating. It wasn't until he had to call them for help a couple weeks ago that he gave it any thought. Chest pains turned out to be nothing too serious for him but, he lives alone and said at the time the pain was so great he couldn't drive to the hospital. Guess who showed up? Yes, Franconia Fire Company. You never know when you might need to call for help and if everyone took the approach of “I’m never going to have to call so I’m not donating” resources they use to respond with would be severely diminished. It’s not about how much you can give; it’s about coming together as a community and doing what you can for the greater good. I hope I never have to call for help but, that won’t stop me from making a yearly donation. When you see them on the road kindly get out of their way immediately, you would want other citizens to do the same if it was your family they were hurrying to rescue.
Thank you to men and women in local Fire Departments everywhere who risk their lives to save others.
