The Young Adventurers were treated to a special outing this month at the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park in Carlsbad. 11 Youngsters were excited to make the trip and were accompanied by three chaperones/drivers. During the trip it was clear that none of the children nor the adults had ever seen Leo Carrillo on television.
The Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park is open Tuesday-Saturday from 9am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm. Tours are available with specific start times as noted on their website or by advance reservation. The tour includes information about the previous settlers on the property, including the Kelly Family that built an adobe in the mid 1800s as well as the information about the Native American. Luiseño was the name given the local Native Americans by the Spanish explorers.
In addition to preserving the history of the area, the 27 acre Rancho is also used for special events, including weddings, receptions and fundraisers.
There are also a few resident peacocks on the property as seen below trying flee from our Young Adventurers.
Although the photo above appears to be a lush green lawn, it is synthetic turf and requires zero maintenance. Not synthetic, the photo below is a very nice example of a drought tolerant garden on the property.
