In recent months there has been much negative press surrounding the housing industry. As the REALTOR portion of that industry I think it is time to pause and reflect on much that we have to be grateful for:

  • we are independent contractors running our own businesses
  • we set our own hours
  • our creativity and branding are determined by us
  • we control our marketing budgets
  • we decide what our business focus is on and who we will work with
  • we are contributing to society's greater good through our practiced and learned skills
  • by nature we are risk takers which gives us the opportunity for great rewards
  • in all economic cycles we can adjust our business model to suit the conditions
  • we are privileged to interact with so many diverse clients and partners
  • we have one of the BEST kinds of work among many to choose from
  • above all we have a passion for this business and the fine people we work with everyday

For all those REALTORS, residential, commercial, or investment, seeing the glass half full rather than half empty and seeing the blessings you DO have gives you great perspective. Being grateful is one of the keys to happiness.

Thanks Gary for the positive perspective.  I had a corporate career for many years, which I loved, but I wouldn't trade this profession for anything, mainly for most of the reasons you list.

I too like real estate much better than the corp job. It pays better bt several times. You are allowed to fail in your own business and try someting else. I never tell myself you cannot do this or that.

You bring up some really good points.  As I tell people when they ask how the market is - I could be negative like everyone else I run into seems to be (both Realtors/Lenders) or reflect on one or more of the items on your list.  Thanks for the post.

Your perspective speaks of experience and reasoning, well done. No doubt current market conditions are a wake up call (or more like hitting-over-the-head call) for some. Real estate, among others things is cyclical.

Lynda, Thanks for your comments. My home area of Flower Mound is a suburb north of the airport here in Dallas, Texas. It was rated as one of the top places to live in the country especially for raising a family. The population has boomed over the last decade or so from 15,000 to 64,000. Like many of the Dallas area fast growing suburbs it has that small town feel but it is close to all the city stuff if that's what you want to get to. Flower Mound and the surrounding area has a lot more trees than most of the Metroplex as well and they have put in strict restrictions to preserve the trees. The housing is very affordable with modest year over year price appreciation. Our area of the country never experienced the boom in real estate prices the east and west coasts saw. That's because we have a large amount of new home construction.

After my comment I looked at Flower Mound, TX, sure looks like you have a whole bunch of AR's there! If you've had appreciation, that's great, sounds to me like a nice place to be. BTW, you're now my FM connection.

 Gary, thank you for your perspective of the real estate business!  We need more positive people in it doing what they need to do to make it work for themselves.  We are blessed to be part of such a great country giving us the ability to do whatever we want to do with our lives.  I want to surround myself with positive people like yourself who views our profession as a blessing!  Best wishes!

Great post Gary - the economy and real estate all cycle. In Canada we have certainly observed economic cycles and trends. We're in a definite high now on BC with construction and labor shortages increasing like never before, but it wasn't so long ago that it wasn't so great. And truth to tell there are certainly difficulties and hardships with this type of economic cycle as well!

Tracy, attitude is everything. We all have circumstances. When all is going well who can't help but smile? But when things go sideways you just have to hang in there and deal with things the best you can. No one likes hardship but you just have to see you way through it. I always tell people the storm is not the end of the story. Just ride it out and the sun is on the other side.
