BACK TO SCHOOL MEANS A CHANGE OF PACE

FOR PARENTS AND KIDS

BELOW I TRIED TO GIVE SOME GOOD ADVICE FOR NEW HOMEOWNERS IN GARDEN CITY, NEW YORK.  IT HAS LINKS TO WEBSITES AND OTHER INFO THAT CAN’T HURT EVEN IF YOU’RE A LONG-TIME RESIDENT.

However, for the sake of getting rolling nice and easy, here are some quotes, tips, and suggestions to make life easier.  First, though, I think it is always interesting to read a Mission Statement, and here is the one published by the District Offices:

District Mission Statement

The Garden City School District seeks to create an environment for learning which enables each student the opportunity to grow as an individual as well as a group member while striving to achieve the optimal level of academic, social and personal success.

Students will thrive in a learning environment that is developmentally appropriate, individualized and challenging.

Our goal and responsibility is to help each student develop an enthusiasm for learning, a respect for self and others, and the skills to become a creative independent thinker and problem solver.

I happen to like it.  It is simple and straightforward.  I do believe that they lack the higher end learning mentioned within the text.  I don’t think they are well developed to handle the gifted learner and cutting these programs after Elementary School leaves many children bored and depressed in class.  But, that’s a story for another day.

First – get you school calendar.  Post it to your refrigerator like everyone I know.  Take your child’s or children’s sports calendar and write it onto the main calendar.  Then, don’t forget to get the bus schedule and write it on the calendar.  Yes, of course you’ll remember it, but it will be nice the first day, and will also help you mentally prepare yourself – especially if you have 3 different busses coming at 3 different times.

Well, if possible, take care of you back to school list and get the school supply list from your teacher’s website.  Remember, the district’s website is: http://www.gardencity.k12.ny.us

You should have received your kids teacher’s by mail already, so go to the page for their teacher(s) and check for the back to school – school supply list.  It can’t hurt to get it done sooner than later.

If you really want to participate fully in your child’s school, you can get the school board meeting schedule at: http://www.gardencity.k12.ny.us/board_of_education/boe_calendar/

That’s the Board of Education Calendar, but on that page are links for District Offices, Schools, the District Directory, and pages for parents, for staff and for information.  So, it’s pretty complete.  I may be the exception, but I found spending an evening at a school board meeting to be horrible; it gave me nightmares for weeks.  The boredom, the blathering and the baloney just made me want to hide.  But, you might love it.

Good luck and I hope all the kids have a great year this year.  One last thing: when all else fails, the district’s general phone number is 516-478-1000.  They can probably be the first step towards helping you with any problem you may have.  GOOD LUCK!
