Communication - Listening is a Key to Your Success

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Elite RM423455

In the first post on communication, I spoke about the importance of clarifying in your own mind what you needed or wanted to ask for. Stephen Covey in Seven Habits of Highly Effective PeopleCommunication - Listening describes this as beginning with the end in mind.

A second important point of communication is to listen. Do not interrupt. Do not begin thinking about what you are going to say and ignore what the other person may be saying. Listening is a key component of communication. Ask relevant questions and listen to the responses.

When you listen to another person, you discover the values and the motivations of the other person.  Are you going to be more effective in your job, in your family and your relationship as a whole, if you truly understand what is driving the other person? The answer is a hearty, “Yes!”

I can explain how I will help the other person achieve his or her goals after I understand what is important to him or her. It makes me a more effective realtor®. It allows me to be a better husband and father. How well do you listen? Truly listen?

If you value communication and want someone who will actually listen to you, please contact me.

I actually took Covey's entire course when he was really popular back in the early 90's. Made sense then. If I could remember the contents now, I'd be a happy camper.

Hi Cal,
This so true!
You’re pushing some hot buttons.......  We sometimes speak too quickly but listening first and seeking to understand instead of being understood is the key to any successful relationship!
Have a wonderful week!

I agree Cal, listening is key.  For me, if someone is rambling on and on about inconsequential things though, I do stop them and ask them to please get to the point.............I don't need the 10 year history, just the problem at hand.

Hi Cal,

Nice post.  Listening is critical; sometimes clients aren't even sure of what they want so patience and "an ear for what they are really saying" can avoid frustration for everyone.

Cal, Effective listening is paramount to being an effective speaker and one that I often mess up on!  Thanks for reminding me.

Great post Cal.  Listening is the key to any successful relatioship.  Agents often want to share their opinions even if the client is not asking for it.

Lisa, you are right about having patience and listening, so clients can discover what they want.

Judi, I needed to remind myself.

Anne, I agree.

Howard and Susan, listening is key to relationships. I have opinions and things to share, but listening and adding them when appropriate seems to work well for me.

This must be why my Dad always said you have two ears and one mouth for a reason, lol.  By listening we can learn so much very quickly

Dorie, thanks.

Bob, so true. Our fathers somehow had lots of wisdom, didn't they?

Don, I know I need to heed my own advice more frequently.

Cal, great post!  I truly believe that bad communication and listening is the root of most issues that occur.  It is very important as realtors to communicate properly when working with a client, a transaction, the other broker, etc.  Again, great post!  --Krystal

Cal - I too travel from Judi's reblog.  I'll also point to the wisdom of Bob's (#14) father's saying about two ears and one mouth.  However, I am reminded that sometimes the "long story" tells you a lot more than the Reader's Digest version.  Over time, I have discovered that taking the time to hear all the seemingly unrelated details (aka ... ramblings) reveals a truth that would otherwise only be found in the "re-do" activities ... with the thought "if I had only known (this or that) ... then I could have avoid all of this ...."  Thanks for sharing and I look forward to your continuing observations around communication.

Judi sent me and glad she did.  You cannot communicate if you are not listening and listening is not always easy.  Like I tell my grand children, look at me and put your listening ears on.  They are very different from regular ears.
