Wordless Wednesday - Hawkeye Dog Faithful To The End

Hawkeye Dog

A note on this one. Labrador Retriever Hawkeye laid at the foot of the flag draped coffin in a gymnasium at the funeral of U.S. Navy Master Petty Officer Jon Tumlinson, age 35, who was killed in a Chinook helicopter attack and crash on August 6th in Afghanistan. Jon was a Navy SEAL. Hawkeye was loyal to the end and refused to leave his side. A personal pet, Hawkeye will be taken care of by a family friend who had looked after Hawkeye while Jon was overseas. We all should have such loyalty to those we love and are dedicated to and miss when they are gone from us.

Gary, it brought tears to my eyes when I saw the picture.  Pets are so special and they love us unconditionally.  My 2 cats took turn to sleep with me when I was sick last month, they don't usually see me laying in bed during the day, they knew something was wrong.  So precious.

Gary,

I saw this on TV a couple of days ago. This dog loved him so deeply. I hope they find a good home for him or he will grieve himself to death. I understand we must have war to remain free but it is horrible when men have to give up their lives. So sorry for the family.

Hi Gary, I had seen this on the news and it was certainly a reminder of the love I knew with my lillte ones. When a pet's love is reciprocated, it is so very powerful and affects both family members. It is both sad and touching when the love is so strong and life as we know it, ends.

God bless those who gave their lives so that we can be protected from harm. I have a brother who is in the Navy so I definitely appreciate what the military has done for us. Thanks for sharing Gary.

Just behind the coffin was also a photo of this man and his dog...this is one of those emotion evoking photos that make you want to cry. Bless our soldiers. Thank God for our pets as well.

Gary-That is a true example of why they call a dog man's best friend. I remember a story from LONG ago about something like this except it wasn't a soldier but the loyalty is the same.

On Wordpress the other day, a suggested blog topic was write a to write a story in six words or less.  Their example was:  Baby shoes for sale. Never worn.   The photograph in your post says so much.  Had I commented on the six word blog, I think I'd say:  "Dog stays by flag draped coffin."  That was such a powerful photograph above.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I felt so bad for the family and that whole large loss of our valuable servicemen in that crash earlier in August. It is amazing how dogs sense these things too. Wonderful comments by all, and I do appreciate them much. If you search on the web on this story they do have photos the other direction too with more the interior of the gymnasium and they report all the many people that attended Jon's funeral. I so hope these wars end as soon as they can cause this loss of life is very tragic.
