McAllister House Museum Downtown Colorado Springs

FREE FIRST FRIDAY

McAllister House Museum Downtown Colorado SpringsThe McAllister House Museum at 423 North Cascade Avenue in Downtown Colorado Springs is the oldest house in the City.  Built by Major Henry McAllister in 1873, it is now owned and operated by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America of Colorado (NSCDAofCO).

Celebrating their 50th year as curators for this charming home, the NSCDAofCO are offering FREE First Fridays through the month of December to celebrate this Golden Anniversary.  On the first Friday of each month, the Dames are offering these FREE First Fridays as their way of giving back to the community that has supported them for half a century, and as their way of saying “Thank You” for your continued support.

This Friday, September 2, there will be free tours of the McAllister House Museum on the hour at noon, 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00.  They can only take ten people per tour, so it is suggested that you make McAllister House Museum Downtown Colorado Springsreservations in advance by calling (719) 635-7925.   If you do not have reservations, you may visit on a first come, first served basis.

If you are a walk-in (without reservations), there will be someone in The Carriage House behind the main home from whom to secure your tickets.  The tour takes approximately forty-five minutes, and you will learn historic information about the McAllisters, the times in which they lived, and how they lived in the home.

The McAllister House Museum is also open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm weekly.  You may get additional details by calling (719) 635-7925.  I hope you will take advantage of this generous opportunity to experience a piece of Downtown Colorado Springs’ history.

Thanks, Andy.  Did your son end up with a place off campus?

Thanks, Larry.  I am really excited about this challenge because I haven't done localism much before, so I love that it will get me in the mindset.

Mimi, Beautifully done!  This was also perfectly timed, with the FREE Friday Tour offer being started tomorrow.  The additional links to the McAllister House Museum and The Carrage House were also appreciated.  I'll bet this house has a lot to say, if only those walls could talk.  ;-)  Best wishes always.

Thank you so much, Martha.  It is a fantastic place, and the Docents do a wonderful job with it.

Richard, Richard, Richard . . . thank you for your comment.  I will have to do some "Talking Wall" posts during this challenge :)  Actually, they had a paranormal team come in and do video, and had quite a bit of activity.  It was kinda cool.  Lots of history with this house

That looks like a cool spot to visit Mimi. It's a very charming home and post.

I'm not sure I'd want to "hear the walls" talk, but I agree with Richard, I'll bet there would be some great stories.

Lovely piece Mimi.

Thank you, sweet Debb . . . Richard was talking about a section on my website called Talking Walls, where I tell the history of some of the homes downtown.  People who own old houses want everyone to know about who built it and who lived there, etc.  I find it fascinating . . .

Mimi - you're off with a bang and what a great localism post. The McAllister House Museum looks like such an interesting way to spend the day, while learning about the home and town's local history. I live close to George Washington's head quarters and it's a really cool place to visit - maybe I should do a localism post on it - thanks for the idea!

Hello, dear Sharon.  Inside it is a combination of beautiful and rustic.  It has 16" thick walls, and was struck by lightning about a month ago, but survived quite well.  You too, sweet friend.

I used to live at the base of Mt. Vernon, Kristine, and we used to sit on the fence all the time and dream about what life must have been like (yes, I've always been a romantic at heart :) ).  Think it is a great idea!  I'd love to hear about it.  Didn't think you were going to do the Contest, but no reason you can't get some good local posts in.  Sure thinking about you and hugging you.

Mimi, elegance is as elegance does.    This reminds me of a tea room, and that's odd because I've never been in one.  It's very charming and beautifully narrated, in your inimitable style.  Brian

Good morning, Brian . . . I love it when you talk dirty like that ;)

Debb . . . that Richard doesn't miss a beat, does he?  If you specialize in Victorian Homes, doesn't the idea of Talking Walls make a lot of sense? And a lot of fun?
