Buffalo buffalo, Buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

Buffal buffaloYes...that is a legitimate sentence.  I don't know why, but today I was in the mood for something different.  Let me explain how this sentence makes sense.  (My kids love this sentence)

Buffalo buffalo......

Say you own a bunch of buffalo.  Ok.....all together....."you own a bunch of buffalo".  You could shorten it and just say that you have buffalo (plural of buffalo) rather than a bunch of buffalo.

Now say your buffalo are from that town in western New York, you know...Buffalo.  You would now have a Buffalo buffalo.

With me so far?  That's the easy part.

Buffalo buffalo, Buffalo buffalo.....

This is a bit trickier.  Say your Buffalo buffalo aren't owned by you.  Lets say your Buffalo buffalo are owned by a me.  Thanks.  I always wanted your Buffalo buffalo!

They are my Buffalo buffalo.  Or just .... My Buffalo buffalo.

Now lets say I give my Buffalo buffalo to a group of cows.  Don't ask me why.  I just wanted to give my Buffalo buffalo to a bunch of cows!

So we now have cow owned Buffalo buffalo.  So tell me....what type of Buffalo are they?  They are ... Cow Buffalo buffalo.

It turns out that my cows didn't want the Buffalo after-all and sold them to other Buffalo buffalo.  So now we have Buffalo buffalo, Buffalo buffalo.  (you have to get the right voice inflection to sound right.)

Still with me?

Buffalo buffalo, Buffalo buffalo buffalo cows.....

Im getting a headache!Whew...my head is starting to hurt.... but we'll move on.

Let's say that these Buffalo buffalo, Buffalo buffalo aren't very nice.  They like to pick on, or bully, cows.  Oh those cows again!

So the Buffalo buffalo, Buffalo buffalo bully cows.  Let's look up 'bully' in the thesaurus shall we.....

"... bludgeon, bluster, browbeat, buffalo, bulldoze, coerce...."

I bet you knew that would be there!

So Buffalo buffalo, Buffalo buffalo buffalo cows.

These Buffalo from Buffalo owned by buffalo from Buffalo bully cows....

Moving on.....

Buffalo buffalo, Buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo

Ok...are you ready to put this all together?  Do you see where this is going?

It seems that the cows have left town...they've had enough buffaloing.  The deer have moved on, the moose have migrated....there's only Buffalo buffalo owned by Buffalo buffalo left.  These Buffalo buffalo, Buffalo buffalo have no one left to buffalo except other Buffalo buffalo.Buffalo Bully

So....

Are you sitting?

Buffalo buffalo, Buffalo buffalo buffalo other Buffalo buffalo

Or..... (drum roll)....

Buffalo buffalo, Buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

Ta Da!

You're right.  That is different today.  Not a sentence that will come up in casual conversation very often.

I just read on Wikipedia about this sentence (here) and they actually had another 'buffalo' on the end of the sentence.... I tried to understand, but it gave me a headache.
