A blessed life is one given in service to others. When I pay it forward, I often receive far more than I give.
A regular pay it forward activity is caring for Irene. I am the power of attorney for Irene. I regularly take her to doctor appointments, pay her bills, balance her check book, complete forms, and talk to her on the phone. Irene is not aging very gracefully and has little or no family support. She often complains of pains, but nothing seems to alleviate these pains. She also easily forgets things I may tell her the previous day. These memory lapses can at times be exasperating. But as a whole, I do enjoy Irene and paying it forward by helping her.
However, yesterday, I was frustrated. It was no one person's fault. Irene decided to sell her car since she was no longer driving. I found a buyer for her car and it was decided to sign the title over yesterday. The buyer, Irene and I arrived 15 minutes before the notary public opened. I was quite busy and somewhat in a hurry. We were first in line and explained why we were there.
The notary explained what she would need to complete the transaction. Irene needed to provide a photo id. It took some time until we found her drivers license. Upon closer examination, Irene's driver license had expired in April of this year. The notary shook her head and explained there was nothing she could do. We would need to wait until Irene had a valid photo id. I was frustrated. This 5' woman was clearly the same person who was pictured in the expired photo id. No good. I said, "Who in his right mind would be concerned with this woman blowing up a building or being a terrorist." Still no go. At that point in time, I proverbially threw my hands in the air knowing we would need to wait to sign the title over to the buyer.
I learned, sometimes, as rewarding as paying it forward is, it can also be quite frustrating.

You're a good man Cal.............and Irene is so lucky to have you in her life. Yesterday had to be most frustrating, but I'm sure everything will work out well.
And if it ever happens again - a lesson learned. I dopn't thik I would have thought to call ahead, but now I am sure you will for whatever comes up next. I will too! Thanks for sharing. Helping Irene is very good work.
Roger, I am also lucky to have Irene in my life. She somehow keeps me grounded.
Anne, taking a few minutes to plan would have served me well. I did not realize her license had expired, so not sure I would have been prepared for that. The thing is I am her POA, so I can sign for her and that is probably what I will do.
Gerry, thanks for your kind words. I am also richer knowing you and being part of AR.
Good for you, Cal. I do think the Notary might have been taking an incorrect possession. For most, even an expired drivers license could serve as the needed photo ID.
On the flip side, the notary needs to be concerned with expired IDs - it's their license at stake & our state audits their files just like they audit our files.
You are a mover and a shaker and will get this rectified and it will soon all be water under the bridge!
I knew the notary was just doing what she needed to do. Nothing anyone could do at that point in time. Thanks for your kind words Renee. Have a great day!
