Blizzards, Tornadoes, an EARTHQUAKE? ... oh my! What an interesting year it has been for us here in Connecticut. And now after Hurricane Irene, we're left wondering....what next!? While that might be a legitimate question to ponder, I'd rather not to go there.
I prefer to reflect a bit on what I've learned from this tumultuous year (and I'm not just talking about the weather). First of all, I've learned to be grateful - because, like my mother always said, no matter how bad we think we have it, things could always be worse.
I feel so very fortunate that my family, friends and neighbors have all managed to weather these storms with relatively little damamge. After all, a temporary power outage or a wet basement is nothing compared to the devestation suffered by the victims of the Tsunami in Japan just a few months ago. It's all about putting things in perspective. Irene didn't quite live up to the media's relentless hype (in my area at least) and I for one have chosen to not complain about that. I'm just thankful we were spared.
I'm also thankful for another valuable lesson ... always be prepared. Cautious optimisim is a good thing. Hope for the best but be prepared for the worst - are words to live by in business and in life. Life will always be throwing us curve balls and all we can do is be prepared and take every opportunity to learn and grow from those inevitable problems that come our way.
A big Thank You goes out to my friend Ann Anderson for inspiring this post!
