PennDOT announces bridge closure on Newportville Road in Bristol Township

PennDOT has announced that Newportville Road in Bristol Township will be closed and detoured beginning Sept. 12, to allow  for a planned six-month PennDOT bridge repair project.

A small single-span stone bridge, built in 1869 and located between Parkview Avenue and Hazel Avenue has been designated "structurally deficient."  The bridge spans a branch of the Neshaminy Creek. Repairs include fixing the side walls, the bridge deck, and adding new parapets, guiderails and pavement.

PennDOT estimates that 8,600+ cars per day travel over the single span  bridge, meaning that the planned detour will mean longer commutes for residents and commuters.  However, local access will be maintained up to the point of construction. Traffic will be detoured over Route 13, Bensalem Boulevard and New Falls Road.

Plan now for the detour to save commuting time.

Anne - with this bridge being out it's going to cause huge traffic tie ups and it's great that you are giving people the head's up so they can prepare themselves to take an alternate route.

Because of Irene, a large section on 287 caved in and who knows how long it will take to fix. Everyone will be rerouted off the exit before the damage and taken through a small town and have to make their way back on to the highway that wasn't affected. Really bad news for the commuters in our area!

That is a long time for a bridge to be active.  Sad to say time marches on and with it so does the history.  Hope someone takes some pictures of the old one to look back on

Kristine: I can't imagine 287 being closed. It was a very busy road 35 years ago, today must be unbelievable>

James: Thanks for the suggestion. Have a great weekend.
