You Are Asked To Run For President Of Your State REALTOR Group....

By
Real Estate Agent with MOOERS REALTY ME Broker License 106759

Your peers make the call, form a posse to hunt you down and work on you to interview, run for president of your statewide REALTOR group.

zebra Maybe it was not something you could ever consider when your family was young, but there comes a point where service, giving back and making a difference to guide your state wise REALTOR group of real estate professionals is in the wind, plans, future.

But as you warm up to the idea and consider what you could bring to the position, some of your friends, colleagues in the REALTOR group say "you don't want to be part of that group, one of them".

And you scratch your head because you look down and notice the person wearing, sporting the identical blue and gold "R" pin.

It should be black and white, no intrigue, spin, disharmony or discord right?

And you have to wonder if it's like a case of friendly fire, lack of loyalty to a group you support, have been a member of for decades.

And you ask "one of them"? Explain because you and I are "them".

Evidently, "Johnny or Jane wants to make a difference" believes like politicians with noble sincere, naive intent, that all changes once you gain entrance to Emerald City... I mean get passed a duplicate key to office of the statewide REALTOR group like your CEO, secretaries of the group carry. And when probed, plodded further, even from members of the executive, officer level, past and current, a few share they started to be mouth pieces for NAR.

Is that bad I thought?

It is if you don't have faith in your leadership on any level. Or if some group is out of touch with an ever changing real estate industry.

Why does being a real estate agent, broker, card carrying, dues cuurent REALTOR out serving your own unique set of zip codes have to change, get lost if you work your way up through the "chairs" as they say in the local service club like Rotary, Elks, Masons, Oddfellows or you pick the group?

Is it a distrust and off hand comment that everyone assumes, just gives lip service to in remarks as a given? Of do you really think the country, your statewide, your national REALTORS group is out of touch? Or has agendas, ideas, direction different than you?

With a country as large as the US, Canada, it is easy to have a few of us that don't carry the exact same set of opinions.

We don't all list, market, sell in Chicago, East Overshoe, Vegas, Wall Walla Washington, Sturgis or you pick the burg, ville.

Because the way the local real estate market rolls is so much different due to everything from price levels, local weather, climate and proximity to population centers or not. Where you come in on the FSSR property listing sales chart has a bearing on the heat in the kitchen where you practice the real estate dog and pony too.

So, would you run for president of your local or state or national REALTOR group and why, why not? And if you served in the past on one of these levels of real estate boards, what was the experience, what did you bring to the position that was successful? The out of touch label on your REALTOR board could be that the individual member who has been out of the loop is not aware of the behind the scenes, maybe because of poor communications of the process. Or lack of interest, involvement of the individual wearing the dark blue, shiny gold pin with the "R" on it. "R", the hardest working, little red hen of the alphabet group by far. Maine, do you think listing and selling real estate is any different here than somewhere else? You bet it is. (Changing cameras, swiveling) and now a word from our sponsor who asks the question why, why do you list, market, sell real estate?

Andy, Me personally?  I don't think I'd even consider a seat on the county board.  I'm pretty apolitical, and have more than enough to do to keep my days packed from start to finish.  But do I think they could use YOU shaking things up?  You bet!  And I like the moose with stripes too :)  Bill

Barbara... in hockey they call the ref zebras...luckily only one zebra pictured.

L and B ... Have served as Aroostook County REALTOR Council president twice. But sometimes you can be more effective outside the top echelon and do more as a David, not saddled down with a Goliath slow moving group with lots of opinions, power struggles and political maneuver (brokering) big board to ask "what do you think", what would "NAR say about it?" I agree with you about apolitical but if we all were, the few that are make a mess of things. Or become self serving. At state conventions sometime the proud as a peacock REALTOR member can become so engrossed in their busy work that relating to the rank and file is lost. Some folks are built for leadership roles, some others are an army of one. Our industry is lagging in the mediastream usage with cutting edge devices, software, platforms to weed and feed. But if you are an older REALTOR that is still using the black and white Polaroid self developing camera in your real estate marketing, all this new fangle blogging, vidcasting, podcasting and social media could make you want to run and hide. You might not support a new whipper snapper at the helm whipping you in to shape, bringing your real estate group in to the 2011 era.

Andrew-It is not something I would do. As a relativley new Realtor, I lack the experience in real estate to take on such a challenge. And, I do not think I would like the committee meetings, political arm twisting of elected political leaders, and the fund raising.

Andrew, I haven't been in the business long enough to feel that I could handle a challenge like that. If I did feel confident enough in my abilities, I think I would carefully consider that option. If people don't step forward to offer their services and experience, then we would have a huge void in this industry.

Wayne ... the hard part is not getting meeting to death, having a year agenda that dove tails with NAR. The tricky issue would be anything  fro NAR that your local state membership is not on the same page about and being torn on serving two masters. Loss of creativity, your leadership voice could make the year a waste and just a treading water ordeal. It is not about the honor, the resume item that you did it. You want to help your state real estate industry and bring to them what you have for skills... media, marketing, blogging and using new tools instead of just the same old same old. The real estate industry as a whole is not as technological black belt as it should be. Not a criticism, just the way it is. And at annual meetings, have members say so and that they feel overwhelmed. That is the help they need from the leadership of that state REALTOR group.

Marisa ... Good point. Know well that is it not just house, home. Land values are up across the country and a big part of our market. Plus folks concerned about fertile soil are thinking of an acre worth more than an ounce os gold. And where they may be planting good wholesome food to feed their family and put food on the tables of others.

Malcolm ... When you have a young family, are a coach of a little league, hockey team and on the school board, local rotary, elks, masons, etc boards, not an option. But there comes a time to give back, step forward. Many I talked to said no way, what would benefit them and its lonely at the top. You get blamed for everything wrong and lots of rotten vegetables thrown if not responsive, solution oriented to rally the troops with Lou Ludwig optimism. Fixing problems does not mean everyone will agree with the method but if they know you are sincere, the problem complex, they can join up, become less apathetic. Self serving leaders don't help the industry, the state.

I am not clear on the politics that go on between NAR and your Maine State Realtor Association, but I think it is fascinating to consider. Yes, I definitely would consider the position! I think you would do a great job Andy. It is interesting that your friends have the feelings you suggest. You know them better, but is it possible they are envious or worried that you will no longer have time for them? Just seems like a rather strange response.
