Mobile Technology to Change How We Communicate Real Estate

Real Estate Agent with Copeland Group Realty

I'm old enough to remember when computers first hit the consumer shelves. Personal computers revolutionized the way the business world worked and the way human beings communicate with each other. Then came cell phones, video chat and conferencing, and broadband internet, which further connected far ends of the continent.

Textmessage I believe we're in another revolutionary time, where mobile technology applications will put our communication in warp speed (Star Trek term, for readers Generation Y and younger).

WHY MOBILE TECHNOLOGIES WILL CHANGE REAL ESTATE
I did an interview with Glen at Inman News last week to discuss the use of mobile tech in real estate. I made a bold statement, which was that any real estate agent, buyer, seller or investor who does not master the use of text messaging and other mobile applications in 2008 will miss the boat.

Some agents think having a "sticky" website or blog will put them ahead of the curve, but I think communicating with current and potential clients via a cell phone or PDA is an absolute requirement.

Mobile tech such as text messaging, SMS flyers, and mobile video on demand are a must, especially in slower markets. With 76% of the nation using text messaging, advertisers and other companies have stepped onto the bandwagon to get information to consumers INSTANTLY.

Thanks for the information on Drivebuy. Looking interesting and something worth checking into. How long have you been using and what are the results?

Dee - I really appreciatedyour post.  Mobile technology will certainly be the form of communication Realtors will need to embrace.  I am presently planning for 2008 and I will certain check into the services you mentioned.

Hi Drew! So far, the text messaging has yield similar results to the home hotline. We have to text buyers back immediately to get them to respond. I don't have an assistant who can sit at her desk all day, but I think a good value would be to have an SMS flyer from Vflyer sent to the phone as soon as possible.

Jeninifer. Thanks! I'm glad to hear that you're planning for '08 because now is a good time to assess what you're doing and how to get more value out of it.

Brian, I agree. Initially, text messaging seemed foreign, but it picked up steam quickly. I use it all of the time with clients and even teach them how to do it because it saves time. They also like that instant response.

Hi Dee!  Very nice work on your blog.  And I agree that far too few agents are keeping up with SMS and the like.  I remember in the early 90s when I was in the field selling, Realtors were all over technology.  This is when we were afraid the internet would replace us.  Now that everyone knows that won't happen, I guess some are too lazy to keep up.  Makes room for those of us who do, eh?  Keep making "bold statements" like that.  I've blogged on that topic before myself.

PS.  My day job is obviously as a speaker/trainer for Floyd Wickman but I left my license in the same office yours is in.  Maybe we'll meet one day soon!
