Continuing education without the credit. We get it every day.

The School of Hard KnocksOver the last few years, the real estate business has become quite insane. What was once a fairly straightforward “cut and dried” process is now more of a free-for-all, with new rules, regulations, procedures and requirements every single day!

Clients often act surprised when we run into a “new” situation that has never popped up before. They assume that a seasoned veteran has seen and done just about everything that can possibly occur in every transaction.

If experience is the best teacher, I have learned more over the last two years than in any other point in my life. The “School of Hard Knocks” has taught me more about the real estate business than I ever could have imagined.

And I haven’t graduated yet. There seems to be a new “pop quiz” each and every day.

Experience is the best teacher that I have found. I tire of being forced to take a class and learn absolutely nothing in it. The fees are high and the work "Mandatory" goes before the fee. Realtors in Florida have fees coming and going. Some classes are informative and others are time consuming.

Hi Richard!  Never a dull moment.   That's what makes it an exciting and rewarding career, right?

Richard, very true.  I see a lot of agents go to formal courses and muddle through, remembering very little of what they learned, but they get to stick some initials after their name.  Others, are continually learning and using their knowledge every day.

I tell both buyers and seller alike, "we've entered a brave new world" in real estate and I learn new stuff and the rules change as fast as I can learn them.

Richard,

The old saying "you learn something new everday" is most appropriate in today's real estate industry. We just have to keep ours eyes open and our ears in tune. Thanks for the post.

I have a broker's license since 1987, and truly, there is something new to learn every day.

In a way I miss the bull pen layout of the old real estate offices. There you could get constant education from hearing the conversations of agents on the phone sorting out problems.

Now, I 'reply all' to my Realtor Breakfast Club associates with a question. That's helpful too.

The last 3-4 years has been a big learning experience for everyone in our industry.  Of course, I still routinely encounter agents who still think its 2006 when it comes to getting a mortgage.  Four years later, they still don't understand things have changed.

Richard - I agree with you.  These pop quizzes seem to pop up way too frequently the last few years.

I am optimist, and so, of course I believe it will get easier and more predictable in the next few months, or at most...another year or two or three.  Let's check back in 2014 or so.

The banks definitely make up rules and break them every day. It reminds me of vertigo training for pilots.

Even though I've been in the reverse mortgaeg business since 1999, I too learn something new every day.  Too bad we don't get CE credits on our expereinces. :-)

A couple years ago I was talking with a man who had just started in reverse mortgages about a month prior.  I suggested some sources for his educating about reverse mortgages.  His reply was that he had learned everything he needed to know.  I told him how long I've been in the industry and that I learn something new every day.  I feel sorry for his clients - he certainly isn't doing them or our industry any favors.

Sometimes I wish we had a few dull moments, at least for a day or two.

You said it. With all that is new that we confront daily, my state has two rules that confound me. Brokers with 15 years of experience are exempt from CE; and CE is now offered online. Both are foolish.

While I do learn from expereince I am also glad that I can learn from all of the fine agents on AR! It's nice to get a heads up on what could be coming your way from across the country! I know I just thought of one new blog that I have to do before I forget! It also helps to have a little repetition on AR because just about the time you forget it from the last time it was blogged someone else blogs about it. And then after a while you just don't foreget it!

You are so right about new issues popping up and seems like on a daily basis.  I used to feel bad about telling a client, I do not know the answer to that question, but now I say it often and tell them that I will get back to them with the information.
