This has turned into a fun series for me to write. A while back I found one of Louis L’Amour’s books of short stories at Walmart in the $1.99 book bin. I bought and put it on the shelf, wanting to read several other books that I have before I got into this book The book is entitled “Big Medicine”.
The other night I picked it up and started reading it mainly because I couldn’t sleep, it didn’t help me sleep, I found that was that it was very difficult to put it down. The lesson that I got from this book isn’t that different from the lesson of loyalty or riding for the brand.
This is the lesson of standing for something. There is an old saying that you have to stand for something, or you will fall for anything. That is true, the point that is made in many of Louis L’Amour ‘s books is that you have to stand for what is right.
The type of standing for right that he is talking about is the root of our beings. It defines our integrity. It is easy to do what is right when people are watching, but what do we do when no one is watching? Do we cut corners when no one is watching? That is the moment when we find out what kind of a person we are.
It is more than just doing the right thing, which is a large part of standing for something. It is also the knowledge that there are some things worth fighting for, whether it is popular or not. It is the same trait that inspired our Founding Fathers to risk everything for the ideal of freedom.
I am not advocating that we run out and assault someone. I am saying that there are times to take a stand, let people know that we believe that something is wrong. It is also letting people know that something is right.
It is also always doing the right thing in your business, whether anyone is watching or not. Our integrity is the foundation of our businesses. It is not always the easy thing to do, but it is always the best thing to do.
