Yes, I would love to write you a check. INVEST IN HILLCREST E.S.

Hillcrest Elementary schoolI am a proud parent of a brand new Kindergartner at Hillcrest Elementary School in Catonsville Maryland. His official public school education will finally start tomorrow- thanks to Hurricane Irene and the disruptions! A bitter sweet day!

The previous 3 years my son attended the wonderful Mothers Day Out Westchester pre-school and around the beginning of the school year he came home with a book of Pizzas and cookies that myself and all the people I could cajole into buying would sign up for. A few weeks later and an awful lot of effort and stress (due to not getting the correct order to the correct recipient) it would all be over. The school would benefit from 50% of the proceeds and I would have a freezer full of chocolate chip cookies (that are still there today!).

I braced myself for the onslaught of what public school would bring with their "start of school fundraiser". How much wrapping paper did I really need?

I JUST CAN'T WAIT!

BUT, and it's a big BUT who has time for this? ~ Hillcrest Elementary PTA made an executive decision last year to STOP THE INSANITY.

STOP sending home brochures with overpriced items that need to be sold.

STOP the guilt of Parents, Siblings, neighbors, co-workers and random nice people that DON'T want cookies, popcorn, pizza or wrapping paper but can't resist the upturned face of a sweet 5 year old who is trying to raise money for his school.

STOP the hours of time that it takes to organize who gets what.

STOP only getting 50% of the proceeds for the effort.

HILLCREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PTA JUST STOPPED!

(A noted fact is that the schools PTA was recognized as one of the top organized Parent Teacher Associations in Baltimore County.)

invest in hillcrestSo what about the money that the PTA need to enhance and raise for the schools?

JUST WRITE US A CHECK! SHOW ME THE MONEY.

INVEST IN HILLCREST

It makes so much more sense. Every family that has a student at Hillcrest ES is encouraged to write a check for $125. No more painful fundraisers that force everyone to either buy what they don't want or hide from you when they see you approach with that dreaded brochure. AND 100% GOES TO ENHANCE THE LIVES OF THE STUDENTS AT HILLCREST E.S.

Payments can be made in installments and spread out over the year.

IT'S A WIN WIN IN CATONSVILLE.

That is certainly a lot more sensible than having a bunch of stuff you don't want or feeling uncomfortable asking the people who you purchased all these items from to kick in some cash.   As with everything in life, it isn't fair, some people won't contribute, but it really doesn't matter does it?   What matters is the kids; and in these ever tightening budget times, their ability to experience art and music or get relevant books or supplies that are appropriate and up to date.   Good for you Ellie and good for the school.

Sounds like a good idea.  I hate carting around those magazines with expensive pizza that's not even tasty.

Yvette. Participation last year was high and the PTA made their budget...and some. YES, it's great for the school.

I am a huge fan of this!

I have never been comfortable asking people who have their own kids or grandkids to support my daughter's school fundraisers.

Kudos to Hilcrest, maybe more schools will adopt this plan!

The high school here does this but it's only $15 per family.  Maybe because it's a large school.  Great idea!

Our fee is not quite so high, but we are doing the same thing. Its a better idea than trying to sell things.
