New Rules for Vacationing Real Estate Agents

New Rules for Vacationing Real Estate AgentsI know that for many people, real estate agents included...vacation season is over.  But I decided to write this blog now because before you know it the holidays will be upon us and agents will be back in vacation mode.

All I want to ask of you here is that you prepare for your vacation.  While I am a firm believer that there are painfully few real estate emergencies (if any), business does have to go on in your absence.  In the words of Bill Maher, it's time for some "New Rules".

New Rule - Leave Someone in Charge

It's easy enough to think that nothing will happen while you're away, but trust me, something ALWAYS comes up.  You may also think that you can just check your email and voice mail periodically.  While this sounds good in theory, in practice it just doesn't work.

New Rule - Compensate for Coverage

Work out an agreement in advance so all parties are clear as to what the compensation is.  Some agents will pay another agent to handle their business while they are away.  Others will simply cover for one another for free.  But if another agent is writing and negotiating offers for you, you may want to consider a referral fee.  Remember, 50% of something, is better than 50% of nothing...don't be greedy.

New Rule - Clean Up Your Act

If you tend to be a little on the sloppy side, meaning your files are unorganized, you don't put things in writing or perhaps your methods of doing business are a little unconventional, you really need to clean up your act before heading out of town.  All of your "dirty laundry" will be exposed when left unprotected...and it usually isn't pretty.

By Now You Have Realized That These Really Aren't "New Rules"

These are things that every successful real estate agent should be doing any way, but the truth is...they aren't.  If you are reading this you are more than likely an agent who has their act together.  But if you happen to know an agent who needs a little help getting their act together, please feel free to forward this blog to them.

Great advice Candy. I have tried the vacation where I would just check my emails and voicemail but when I did so I never fully relaxed and enjoyed myself. I'm a firm believer in generous compensation to an agent that will cover for you and get the job done. The more you pay them the better job they will do! It has always bee an old joke that if you get slow take a vacation. Buyers and sellers will come out of the woodwork when you make plans to be away!
