Last Saturday night, I took my husband and 15 year old son on a date to see Oklahoma! at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. It was great performance and well worth taking an evening or afternoon to see.
The show, which will close on October 2, 2011, is performed in 'the round' (although the stage itself is square--I think you still call it 'the round.'). This makes for wonderful views from every seat. The performers enter from the four corners of the stage and perform all the musical numbers by rotating so that audience members can enjoy all the performers.
The entire cast was great, but my favorites were Curly, played by Nicholas Rodriguez, Will Parker, played by Cody Williams, and Ado Annie, played by Reston's own, June Schreiner (who is only a Senior in high school, but we will see BIG things from this young performer. Read more about June in the article, Five Minutes with June Schreiner, from the Reston Patch).
Right now Arena Stage is offering a great deal on tickets in celebration of reaching 100K tickets sold:
Arena Stage’s Oklahoma! reaches 100k people! 3-Day Celebration Sale--$45 TICKETS (up to 58% off). September 7-9 only. Call 202-488-3300or visit www.arenastage.org. As you can see, you have to act quickly to take advantage of this discount.
By the way, if you have not seen the new home of Arena Stage, the Mead Center for American Theater, this is an exceptional venue. We parked our car across the street from arena stage, walked to dinner at Station 4 (after making our reservations on Open Table) and then strolled over to the theater. The theater and restaurant are also accesible by Metro.
All in all, it was an exceptional performance in a fantastic location. Just an all around great way to spend an evening!
