Does your voicemail greeting make you sound like a blabbermouth or a great big fibber?

Amy has written a great post about a pet peeve for many of us. Only thing worse is a generic answer with no identification so I wonder if I connected with my intended target. That goes for agents, who should know better, and everyone else, too. How hard is it to set up your voice mail?

Realtor voicemail greetings"Hello, you've reached Agent Aggie.  I'm either on another call or out with clients, so please leave a message."

Ok. Really?  I'm wondering if Real Estate Agents the only folks who do this?  I always want to ask the Agent Aggies if that is really ALL they do.  Are you ALWAYS on the phone or out with clients? Don't you ever eat, sleep, play with your family, go to the movies, or go to the bathroom?  I've never met Agent Aggie, but already I don't trust her.

Then there's, Agent Al.

"Hello, you've reached Agent Al with YouBetterBuyIt Realty. I'm away from my desk so please leave a message.  Please visit my website at www.AgentAl.com. My fax number is 888-123-4567. You can also text me at the number you just called.  I have a cat who enjoys peanut butter and tuna sandwiches...blahblahblah..."

First, Al, I know this is your mobile number.  It is not attached to your desk, so even though you're not at your desk, I assume you still have your mobile phone with you.  Maybe "I'm away from my desk" is just a metaphor for "I'm not working right now"?

Second, using a voicemail greeting to advertise your website makes your message too long, Al.  Ditto with the fax number and all the other excess words.

I don't know about you, but for me..short and to the point (Hello, this is _______ with xyz Realty. Please leave a message and I'll call you back!") with a pleasant tone is perfect for any voicemail greeting, but then again, that's just me.

Based on the number of agents who do not return calls, maybe their voicemail greetings should sound something like this...

"Hello, I'm currently either working at my other job or I may be screening my calls right now, so leave a message and I'll decide if it's worth my time to call you back.  Calling about one of my listings? That's nice.  I still may not call you back because I'm really not into this real estate gig.   I'd rather be a zeppelin pilot.  Have a nice day."

Nice post!!  I do get those voice mails every day when calling other agents!!  I have heard some really long ones, incredibly short ones, no name or company ones, rude ones, funny ones and "all other kinds" of ones!!  I do listen to mine from time to time and I also change my voice mail every 6-8 weeks.  I find it freshens up my public voice!!  This is how I am presenting myself, not only to other associates, family and friends, but to the general public who are all "potential clients".

I agree that it is not easy to come up with something that gets the simple message: I am NOT in right now. Leave me a message so I can call you back." when? I do not know, because I have not heard the message yet.

A friend of mine changed his message to "I'm Busy". That's all he had on the greeting, and it sounded very natural, didn't even seem like a greeting. Within days he had a bunch of friends extremely angry at him, thinking he just said "I'm busy" and hung up on them. We still laugh about it a year later.
