Via Dan Edward Phillips, Realtor and Broker/Owner (Dan Edward Phillips):

Smoke detectors in this part of coastal California should be checked more often than just twice a year.  Once a month would be more appropriate.  The type of smoke detector that needs to be checked is the battery powered variety normally found in older homes.

The reason; this is a very corrosive environment due to the fact that we are located close to a large body of salt water, the Pacific Ocean.

When smoke detectors become corroded, they just stop working.  No annoying alarm like the one you receive with the battery is low.  A smoke detector that has stopped working due to corrosion leaves you without protection.

Get in the habit of taking an extra few minutes and checking them on a regular basis.

Not only keep spare batteries on hand but also keep on hand a spare smoke detector to replace one that has gone 'bad'.

Good information.  It makes sense that electronics can deteriorate just like other things in the ocean areas.  Thanks for the heads up on this.

Hello Lloyd,

I find most people don't even know they are there.

Till it starts "chirping". I tell them to use an "alkaline battery" and don't be cheap when getting one either.

Have a great day, Clint McKie

Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, New Mexico are among the most stable real estate markets in the United States. This has caught the attention of the national media. As such, it is incumbent on local Realtors to provide information about our cities for those interested in investing, relocating, or visiting. My goal with this blog is to highlight issues or topics in real estate, and where appropriate apply them to the local markets.
