Digby, the Amazing Diving Ducktoller

Here is my entry for the Active Rain VBloggers' Talent ContestOk, I'm not really the talent here, but I'm showcasing my dog's talent.  I may have had a hand in encouraging my dog, but really, he's the one doing all the work.  Yes, I have a diving dog.  Actually, Digby is a Nova Scotia Ducktolling Retriever, or "Ducktoller" for short.  They were bred to go hunting for ducks with the hunters.  The hunter would hide in the tall grass, and the Ducktoller would dance along the shore.  This "attracted" or "tolled" the ducks to shore.  Once in good range, the hunter would shoot the ducks.  The dog would then swim out and retrieve the ducks.

As you can see, Digby was born loving the water.  When he was a puppy, a labrador played with some rocks in the river.  Digby observed this, and tried to emulate the other dog's behaviour.  Eventually, he took things a step further, and would plunge his nose into the water.  Digby is now 11 years old, and has taken rock diving to a whole new level.  I hope you enjoy the attached video.

Sally, I did enjoy that video. Digby is such a handsome fellow, and it looks like you were enjoying a nice sunny day at the beach with him.

Stacey - Digby is indeed cute - I love him to pieces.  Thanks for throwing out this challenge - I haven't done a video in a while, so had to watch a few youtube "how-to" videos!  It's great to stretch ourselves.

SandPitPeg!  Ha ha!  I couldn't resist!  Oh, I hope you can find a photo of your dog - what a wonderful combination.  I bet he was gorgeous.

Malcolm - Glad you liked the video!  I think you should post another video of your special squirrel and show how he climbs up your leg - I still find that amazing.  Boiling hot here again today (no, I promise I won't wish for rain, but...).

Sally:

Digby is the smartest dog in the world, except for my dog.  Very talented, he fetches rocks.

Evelyn - Ha ha!  What kind of dog do you have?  Ok, your dog can be the smartest, and mine can be the most athletic.  How's that?!!

Sally,

Digby looks like a fun dog with a great personality.  I wonder if the water goes up his nose.

Sherri - He really is a great dog and doesn't have a mean bone in his body - he just wants to play!

Lisa - That's a good question!  I've always wondered if the water goes up his nose, and it's salt water, too!  He does snort and cough sometimes, but not all the time.  He likes diving for rocks much more than swimming out to retrieve a ball.  Go figure...

I guess he's more concerned with retrieving the rock than the water going up his nose.  Very cute little guy!

Lisa - Yes, I think he has a one-track mind - get the rock!  Nothing else matters.

David - I think Digby would expecially love the San Francisco beaches.  Are there any pretty French poodles down there we can hook him up with too?...

Hi Sally, Digby is one amazing dog, and a great entry for the talent competition.....I think there are more entries featuring our dogs than anything else I have seen so far.  But hey, are doggies are talented, right?  When I first saw your video last night, it reminded me of the hound dog in the Movie "Sweet Home Alabama" with Reese Witherspoon where he dives off the Float plane dock and dives down about 12 feet to retrieve the bone Jake through in .....funny stuff.   Thanks for your comments about Moose, I really appreciate it.

John - Oh, I remember the movie, Sweet Home Alabama, but I don't remember the dog diving down.  Will have to rent it again and watch that - ok, if I have to watch a young Matthew McConeckie as well, so be it!  Yes, a human can't come close to the talents a dog has, IMHO.  Love your mulitasking dog - they are so funny.

Valerie - Thanks!  I had to blow the dust off my video camera and reaquaint myself, but a lot of it came back pretty quickly.  This is a great contest, because video is definitely the wave of the future.  Digby's a great dog - I love him to pieces.  Ha ha!  The statue was of Charlemagne... and there's more to come!

Hi Sally, I love your dog Digby. Our best friends had a dog like that, her name was Tika. What a great companion for the family. Also had a neighbour with dogs that carried bricks around all day. They were some sort of retriever as well. I thought my cats werre clever when they play baseball when I throw a paper ball at them. They bat it back to me. I'm a pretty good catch too!

Michelle - Ha ha - I'd love to see a video of your cats playing baseball - now that's funny!  Wow, a dog who carries bricks?  I hope he's a big dog.  There's a huge Wolf Hound in the neighbourhood who carries really big rocks all the way from the doggie park to his house.  You wonder what goes on in their heads!

Sally, when my wife gets home tomorrow, I am going to have to show her this video....thank you for your comments on my post last night and thank you for giving me heads up, that the link was pointing to the wrong page.  #3 says a minimum requirement of 100k points on AR, that is why I said should have that taken care of by the weekend.
