One of the challenges of relocating to a new area is finding the best places for shopping. Locating good grocery stores is usually not too difficult. Most of the major food chains have stores within the limits of most towns and cities. It's finding those really exemplary and unique markets, the ones that cater to the more discerning, high-end shopper, and have every conceivable foodstuff possible, that tend to be rather daunting.

Fortunately, for us here on the Kitsap Peninsula in scenic Washington, we have Central Market in Poulsbo.

Owned & operated by a local independent retail grocery company, and founded in 1957, Town & Country Markets, Inc., along with President Larry Nakata at the helm, currently operate six stores in the Puget Sound area.

Central Market opened in Poulsbo in 1995, and is one of three "destination" concept food stores. These offer a broad scope of quality, selection, and value products to entice, not only people from within the immediate neighboring areas to shop, but also people from farther, surrounding areas as well. In each of their stores, they strive to offer the freshest, highest quality foods available.

Central Market offers "Markets within a Market" by providing a large selection of fresh produce; an amazing variety of fish, including one of my favorites, Sushi Ko, where you can custom order your choice of sushi while you shop; a complete flower & garden shop, a full-service bakery; a vast choice of fine wines and beer; a huge international foods section, and much, much more.

In addition, the staff members are extremely friendly, possessing a knowledge and passion about quality foods.

Central Market is located in Poulsbo, on Hwy. 305, just east of Hwy. 3. Once you've shopped there, you'll keep finding excuses to go back often!

Another blog about food! It surprises me you don't weigh 1200 lbs.

This is a great store. I've been there often. They maintain a bulletin board with hundreds (maybe thousands) of pictures taken by their customers all over the world, holding a Central Market shopping bag! It's very cool to look through the pics. I don't know how it got started, but it's the only grocery store I have seen with it.

Brian - it's actually very similar in feel to some of the "open air" markets down your way. Yes, local content is so much fun. It never garners a lot of comments or points, but hopefully, in the BIG picture, it will drive consumers to moi.

Chris - it's a tad pricey, but you can just lose yourself in the various market areas!

Carole - it's been a godsend for satisfying my frequent sushi fix. We have a couple sushi restaurants nearby, but the sushi at Central Market is very fresh and well presented.

MF - is there EVER a bad time for sushi????

Mark - I do weight 1200  lbs., I just wear it well! Yeah, I've seen the "Bag" Board. Fascinating, effective and fun marketing! I love their paper bags, by the way! Old school with handles!

KK - no, you have to come out here. My treat!  :)

George - Fried??? What, are you CRAZY? Hello! It's sushi, George! Ya know, as in RAW! Actually, there are many types of sushi that are cooked, either steamed or grilled. How about some really yummy grilled Unagi? That would be EEL. Care for some?

Rich... I actually read your comment after I saved my comment.... I'll take some of that yellow tail and tuna. we have some great sushi places in Philly and in Cherry Hill, but not in my town of Haddonfield. Gee, that would be great......  hhhmmm  Now I am hungry.

As for the flying fish, I saw too many of them when I was in the Navy.  I don’t want to even look at them any more, not even the eggs, that is unless you FRY them Rich.
