$3 Million Veteran Housing Program Grant Period Runs Through September 16
AUSTIN – Texas Governor Rick Perry today announced the creation of “Housing4TexasHeroes,
” a Texas Veterans Commission program to provide temporary and permanent housing to Texas Veterans and their families.
The efforts of Gov. Perry and legislative leaders during session helped create Housing4TexasHeroes program.
“The freedoms we all enjoy are the direct result of the service and sacrifice of our veterans, who valued their country and their communities, above themselves,” Gov. Perry said. “Housing4TexasHeroes will help ensure veterans and their families have adequate housing as they ease back into civilian life and enjoy the blessings of liberty they have earned with their own valor and sacrifice.”
Housing4TexasHeroes will provide nearly $3 million in grants through the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans' Assistance to organizations that provide housing to Veterans and their Families.
For this grant period, Housing4TexasHeroes will allocate the funds evenly into two program categories: temporary housing and permanent housing.
Organizations that provide temporary housing to low income or homeless veterans, or to the dependents of veterans who are undergoing long term treatment at a medical facility in Texas, may qualify for grant funds in the temporary housing category.
Organizations that provide permanent housing, such as new home construction or housing modification for Veterans requiring such modifications due to a physical disability or injury, may qualify for funds in the permanent housing category.
“Housing4TexasHeroes is another example the commitment that Governor Perry and the Texas Legislature have to our Texas Veterans and their families, says Thomas Palladino, Executive Director of the Texas Veterans Commission. “All eligible organizations with programs that assist Veterans with housing are encouraged to apply for a grant.”
Housing4TexasHeroes will accept applications through September 16, 2011.

The mission of the Texas Veterans Commission is to advocate for and provide superior service to Veterans and their families in the areas of claims assistance, employment services, education benefits and grant funding. Over 200 skilled counselors in 75 cities provide one-on-one guidance to Veterans and their families to ensure they receive all the benefits to which they are entitled.
