Do you remember where you were 10 years ago when the Attacks of 9/11 took place?
The Flag at the entrance of the Lake Charles 9/11 Memorial is flying half-mast in honor of 9/11 Commeration.
Lake Charles has incorporated a serene 9/11 Memorial along the Boardwalk bordering the lake downtown. I spent a few peaceful moments of reflection at the Memorial. Almost 3,000 people were killed and this tragedy was so overwhelming it is hard to grasp. Americans have not forgotten and all across our nation we will take time to remember the victims and the heros of 9/11.
This Sunday, September 11th at 6:30 pm, The City of Lake Charles will observe 9/11 with a commemorative program near the Memorial on the Civic Center Grounds.
The Lake Charles 9/11 Memorial design incorporates two World Trade Center Beams from the walkway.
No matter where you live a piece of 9/11 is nearby. A hanger at the JFK airport was once full of debris from 9/11. In 10 years pieces of steel have been distributed across the country for Memorials.
One way Lake Charles has incorporated remembrance of lives touched is through the 9/11 symbolism expressed in the design of the Lake Charles Memorial. Clay tiles of fingerprint impressions made by people of the Southwest Louisiana community silently communicates that 9/11 touched all our lives.
Local artist, Susan Arnold designed the "Ribbon of Souls" which surrounds the 9/11 Memorial. The Ribbon of Souls is a colorful circle of stained glass colors. Each piece of stained glass represents a life lost in the 9/11 attacks.
- Earth tones represent the World Trade Center
- Blue represents the Pentagon
- Green represents the Pennsylvania Field
The City of Lake Charles also obtained a piece of limestone from the Pentagon. Two Southwest Louisiana residents have been honored with names engraved in this piece of limestone.
- Lt. Petty Officer 2nd Class Kevin Wayne Yokum who was killed in the Pentagon
- Sulphur LA native Leo Russell Keene III who was killed in the World Trade Center
Don't be alarmed if you hear sirens or bells ringing at NOON, Sunday September 11th. Many law enforcement, fire fighters and churches will be taking a moment to commemorate the attacks on our nation 10 years ago and the lives lost. Lake Charles Residents are asked to stop for a moment to also remember this tragic day in our nation's history.
"My hope is that all those who lost loved ones, those who survived and the brave people who were part of the rescue efforts and the war against terrorism will find comfort on this day of remembrance. May we all recall the the unity and compassion we felt for each other in the weeks and months following September 11th:
