Mist-Birkenfeld Fire Department Volunteer Annual Picnic

Today was a day to honor all of our local volunteers both Fire, Medical and Search and Rescue. These folks are called upon at all hours of the day and night to cover our rural areas, and do a heckuva job!

We had volunteers receiving awards for years of tenure, given out by Chief Dave Crawford.

There were five year volunteers like Butch (and his wife, Delores who will receive hers next year)

Butch drives the emergency vehicles and Delores is the "scribe" taking all vital information about the patient, etc. down by hand...they are very valuable to our community (and are my Fishhawk Lake neighbors!)

Don, seen below is a TWENTY-FIVE YEAR VOLUNTEER--amazing!

Lifeflight was there to show us the helicopter used in some emergency transports done by air.

Fishhawk Lake has a helipad for emergency flights if immediate care is needed and it is time-sensitive. I had a fella at my birthday party at Fishhawk Lake have a minor stroke and was airlifted out very quickly and flown to one of the Portland hospitals.

It's always nice to have them as a back-up, but our volunteers are pretty darn good (and dedicated)!

The kids got to enjoy using the huge firehoses, just like the firefighters.

My husband, Larry is the only paramedic who volunteers out in this area and we are grateful for his credentials and his willingness to be available on weekends! (Delores says he works magic with the patients).

Here he is with the Chief of Elsie, Oregon, Mike. (My husband is on the right).

We had gobs of good food and there were two gals, Fran and Mary who pulled it all together.

There were raffle prizes, hugs and a really good time was had by all. Mist-Birkenfeld RFPD Annual Picnic 2011

In honor of all of our fallen heroes from that fateful day of 9.11.2001, I would like to show my deep appreciation for all emergency responders, both volunteer and professional who put themselves in harm’s way to keep us all a little safer.

Thank you.

Lovely post, Gayle of my heart.  It takes a special kind of person to do what they do, and you captured the charm of the day beautifully.

A wonderful story with the volunteer part and all the beautiful people photos you included for us. The annual picnic has to be such a joy as a get together to get to know everyone so well and having the helicopter there and the kids getting to work the fire hoses, just a real treat for everyone in attendance. I always feel I know your community so well with your descriptions Gayle. Thank you very much.

You have once again captured the "spirit' of your lovely community in your photos and your words. What a nice remembrance too for today's 10 year anniversary of 9/11.

I share in your thanks to our first responders in every community who lay their lives on the lines to protect us.

Lovely Gayle. Have a great Sunday and enjoy our late summer sunshine.  :)

GF - The Mist-Birkenfeld Fire Department Volunteer Annual Picnic looks like a wonderful event and perfect way to honor and remember those who give, and volenteer their time every day, "the First Responders" to such worthy causes. Love all your photos and presentation - you always find a postive spin, even on sad occasions, something the rest of us can take a lesson from!

Steve, I went off to comment on your blog and my computer locked up on trying to download the wonderful version of Our National Anthem, so I didn't get to comment, but I will.  In the meantime, how EXCITING to be featured!  Thank you so much!!
