This is not the time of year when I think about the rainy season in Placerville, Halloween is the usual reference date for me. However, while at the MeetUp in Roseville yesterday, it rained in El Dorado County. Although it lasted only a few minutes, it got me thinking of some things that need to be done before the rains get heavy.

I came up with a few things that I like to check before Halloween.

  • Roof check and maintenance –

Inspect for signs of damage – broken, loose tiles and shingles.

Repair damaged areas to create a water proof roof system.

Clear off the leaves, and debris. These will  end up in the gutters.

Clear away any low hanging branches.

  • Gutter and downspout maintenance

Clear all debris from gutters, flush clean.

        Clear downspouts of any blockage.

Check both gutters and downspouts for leaks. Rust holes, bad seams, and poor connections can be a problem later.

Drainage away from foundation. Water should be directed away from the base of the building

  • Inspect the exterior walls, windows, and doors

Check for voids, cracks, and spots where water may get inside.

         Caulk around windows and doors

Spot paint areas of bare wood, metal, and caulking

Of course, areas of dry rot should be repaired.

  • Miscellaneous

Get firewood ready. Cut, split, and stack firewood now, nobody likes to run out of firewood.

Store or cover items that aren’t meant to be in the extreme weather. If you are done with the patio set, store it now.

These are the items that I check for the rainy season, perhaps the list will spark a list of your own.

Tom:  Great list.  I've already cleaned the debris off and checked my roof.  Got my firewood supply stacked up last week and my caulking gun is at the ready.  Thanks for the reminders!

I saw the lightening yesterday.  I guess that is a sign that winter rains are coming.  I was just getting used to summer again.  I'm still going to wait until Halloween to cover up the outdoor furniture, just in case the AR group wants to throw a party.

Smart thinking Tom.  Preventative maintenance is os much better than dealing w/ the damage after the storm.

I think you are right Marc. It probably is good anywhere, the timing may be different in different areas though.  :)

Tom, we're too late here in Virginia. We've had some horrific downpours during the last couple of weeks with the hurricane. Sunshine the last couple of days so things are looking up. Good checklist.

Nice work reminding us about the gutters.  So much damage to the house can occure just from faulty gutters.  I have seen a lot of home destroyed from water leads
