A PRAYER FOR THE WORLD - IN MEMORY OF 9/11

Rabbi Harold S. Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People, wrote this prayer sometime after September 11th, 2001.  It is suitable for one of any faith.

A PRAYER FOR THE WORLD

Let the rain come and wash away
the ancient grudges, the bitter hatreds
held and nurtured over generations.
Let the rain wash away the memory
of the hurt, the neglect.
Then let the sun come out and
fill the sky with rainbows.
Let the warmth of the sun heal us
wherever we are broken.
Let it burn away the fog so that
we can see each other clearly.
So that we can see beyond labels,
beyond accents, gender or skin color.
Let the warmth and brightness
of the sun melt our selfishness.
So that we can share the joys and
feel the sorrows of our neighbors.
And let the light of the sun
be so strong that we will see all
people as our neighbors.
Let the earth, nourished by rain,
bring forth flowers
to surround us with beauty.
And let the mountains teach our hearts
to reach upward to heaven.

Jill, I remember this from years ago.  A great deal of thought went into this.  We should be grateful to the clergy and poets who have so generously given of themselves to provide comfort.

Thanks.

Jill we all deserve that, the words in this prayer! I had a friend tell me today her 17 year old son just joined the Marines....I hope he never has the chance to experience a war!

Thank you all so much. I like this prayer for its message and its simplicity. I'm anxious to go into the city and see the reflecting pools that were built upon the towers' footprints. As of today, they're open to the public but you need advance reservations to get in and I heard on the news this morning that they're booked solid until October 20th. However, they are open ten hours a day, everday,  and I understand that if you can be flexible with your time, you will get in. It is free. The museum, which is scheduled to open September 11, 2012, will ask for donations.

From everything I've heard, this place is just beautiful and, with all the time they took to plan it, they absolutely got it right. This is the official website to go to for all your information and to reserve entrance to the reflecting pools:
