IN MEMORIAM: 9/11 AND BEYOND
It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years. I remember where I was and every minute of that day as if it was yesterday. I remember rolling my eyes about another stupid Hollywood production that ran on TV before the 2nd plane struck and I realized this was no fictitious event. I remember racing to WMUR-TV in Manchester, NH where I interned at the time and staying for the next 48 hours. I remember trying for days to get through to my family. I remember the confusion, fear and sadness and how it struck us that 9/11 will change our lives forever.
10 years later the horrific events of 9/11 are still unfathomable,
the sheer evilness of a few still shakes us to our core.
DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
Today we remember the 2,977 victims of 9/11. We remember the 2606 who were murdered at the World Trader Center, the 125 at the Pentagon, the 87 aboard AA 11, the 60 on UA 175, the 59 aboard AA 77 and the 40 on UA 93. We will never forget.
Today we honor all the firefighters, police officers, EMTs and civilians who so unselfishly stormed up the towers instead of down and the brave Todd Beamers of the world! We admire your strength and courage and we will never forget your acts of heroism.
Today we remember the more than 6,200 troops who fought and died in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. There are no words large enough to express our gratitude for your bravery. We will never forget.
Today we honor all the men and women in uniform who continue to risk all and sacrifice so much. Thank you – are only two little words which, again, cannot begin to express our gratitude. We honor all the families, the parents who sent their children off to war, the spouses who stay strong on the home-front and the kids whose childhoods revolve around care packages, daddy-dolls and homecomings.
TODAY I AM ALSO HONORING MY 3 PERSONAL HEROES
To my husband Jody –
I deeply respect your unwavering commitment to serve your country and your strength to do so time and time again never ceases to amaze me. It is always painfully hard to say good-bye and I’ve missed you terribly every single day you were gone. I do take comfort in knowing what truly great things you have accomplished - how you cared for the sick, treated the wounded and saved lives! You are my hero and I am proud to be your wife. I love you!
To my Amelie and Angeline –
you, my 2 little princesses, are part of an amazing new generation of little heroes. You were born years after this tragic day but the events of 9/11 have deeply affected your lives. You grow up with combat boots lined up next to your little flip-flops and blowing kisses to the “desert” when daddy has to go away for awhile. You live with the memory of missing daddy at gymnastic practice, at the playground ... and the knowledge of a next good-bye. I see your fears and I feel your pain. I promise you, I will always be right here for you. Remember, be brave like Desperaux! I love you!
