Fascinating recent time in our electoral history where we get to glimpse democracy in action and see how well politics pays off when you need it. I watched the HBO Movie presentation of this event called "Recount" which was very well told and acted out. It followed history and was careful not to add or take away too much but to present
MANY THINGS TO CONSIDER
Things stood out during the movie that I found fascinating. For one thing, it is who you know in high places they comes through in the end. Power is a staple in this world and those that have it benefit from it. Another thing that stood out for me was that you have to litigate to get things done.
LAWSUITS FILED
Several lawsuits were filed as tactics to get others to perform or back off. Clearly lawsuit here are not in the pursuit of righting wrongs, but in manipulation and intimidation. the tragedy is that it worked too. Many lawyers were called in to fight the final battles.
DEMOCRACY IN ACTION
We also go to see how democracy does work. Power is handed off peaceably to the agreed to party without complications or disruptions. If we were to ever want to live what we preach, the way we conducted ourselves with this election proved our beliefs.
NO END TO LITIGATION
It is also interesting to note that there was no end to litigation in trying to settle the controversy of counting the votes and that it could have been contested indefinitely. That would mean that the existing President would have an extended stay in office until things were settled which is in itself a violation of his running term guidelines
GORE GAVE IN
Only Gore saying that for the good of the country he will acquiesce is what stopped it all. That and if he ever wanted to run again, what do you think of a guy who would sue and stop at nothing to seize power? Not the way to win people over..
GOOD EPILOGUE
The movie leaves you with one hell of a question? Did the best man win? The viewer has to answer that question. I have often thought of what Goes response might have been to a 9-11 attack? There would be no way to know the answer to that question...
RECOMMENDED
I recommend seeing this gripping, seat of your pants movie even though you know how it will end. there is so much to glean from it
4 Comments on REMEMBER THE BUSH VERSUS GORE ELECTION WATCH THE MOVIE "RECOUNT"
HI Richie,
Not seen the movie, but remember the period well, and from an outsiders perspective, it certainly did not come accross as a proud moment in American history.
Interesting thought Richie...haven't heard of the movie but truthfully i do not dwell on what isn't but what is and that is the best i can do at present...the ifs, buts just don't present them well- reality is here....thanks for sharing on this day.
Richie,
"Best" is far too subjective for me. In all the recounts that were conducted after the fiasco, George Bush always came out with more votes than Al Gore. I'll just say, the "correct" person won.
Rich
Peter & Linda....that is our history something we lived to see and one day people will ask us what we remember
Hello Ginny...well said and point taken from Rhode Island's own...Ginny
Hello Rich...Excellent point and the movie makes the point too about all the votes always coming out with Bush ahead...thank you for clarity
