I have been the victim of a blindside before, but never in a good way. Today it was in a good way. This morning in my church First Baptist of Eatonton is was children's Sunday School promotion Sunday. Last year I taught 4 and 5 year olds. The next year the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders... are a big group, mostly boys and had given their teachers last year some ... ummm... challenges, so they asked me to take the older children again and I agreed. Those children never misbehave for me for more than a minute. I can give them a "look" and they just stop and behave.
So the "in charge" Joni was doing all the talking and all the 5 of us that teach were up in the front as our children were given their certificates one by one. We sent the older ones to the "youth" department and were waiting for Skipper "mr photographer" to take some shots when Joni said "wait a minute" and she started talking about me.
Of course I began to cry and I didn't even have a tissue in my hand. I was honored for my 20 years of teaching. It's hard to believe that little ones I taught are not parents, but it's true. I have had the occasion twice to have a child say, "you taught my mama". And over the past years I've had children who've given testimonials and say "I learned that in Miss Tammy's class"
Technically I am only committed to teaching one more year, but I have a feeling I will still be sitting around a table with young people talking about how those stories in the Bible can be applied to our lives today and that God's word isn't just "history" but now as well. I can't even count anymore, but there have been some remarkable children pass through. I like to think I help them along their walk and to stop and think before the make the wrong choice.
I will try to post a photo of my class next week. I thought I would have gotten them emailed to me by tonight, but not yet...
