Kansas has been spreading the word about its $221 million dollars sitting in its treasury by using media.  They (the state) feels that many people still do not believe that money could exist for them.

The state of Kansas currently has over 1,200,000 records in which state agencies must manage because they all have varying amounts of money that is owed to people that still live or Kansas or once have.  This is  a growing concern for the Kansas state treasury, as the dollar amounts keep growing.

Kansas desperately wants to familiarize people with the concept of unclaimed money and to do that, they  believe media to be one of the greatest influences in the lives of people.

The state feels that they are making some headway since they have given back about $15 million dollars of the $221 million it's currently holding in their possession.

When you break it down, that's not really that good - less than 10% is given back to the public.  This is very typical in most states.  What they don't tell you is that this state and all others are constantly trying to shorten the dormancy laws so that they (the state) can legally keep the money if it is not claimed within a certain period of time.

With Enthusiasm,

Jeffrey M. Richman
