General Contractor Uses Videos To Get Apartment Complex Jobs

I kind of stumbled into this technique about two years ago, but the results have been worthy of mentioning here. While it is something that has worked for me as a contractor, maybe you can come up with something that better fits into your profession.

I had finally made the decision to start video recording in an attempt to get familiar with recording, editing, and posting for the sake of marketing. I knew that the growth of video marketing was quickly approaching and wanted to be a part of it. I needed to face that fear by just getting started. So I did.

My first attempt in putting together a marketing video was an experiment. I didn’t want to do one on my business, it seemed easier and less fearful to practice on someone else. While working at an apartment community in Cameron Park, Ca., I decided to just record the community as I saw it. I walked the grounds recording short segments to edit later. Buildings, trees, signs, office, weight room, everything got recorded.

With a fresh file of video segments, I learned how to do some basic editing and created my first video of Cameron Oaks Apartments in Cameron Park. It was a little intimidating at first but since it wasn’t my business it seemed easier to do. When it was complete, I uploaded it to YouTube and added some music. I was proud of this final product and wanted to share it with the world that night.

I created a Craigslist ad and added a video to it. Most people don’t know that it is possible to do. If you are interested, I wrote a blog describing how to add video to a Craigslist ad.

The next day, armed with a new video and Craigslist ad, I showed the manager what I had done. She loved it, and viewed it over and over. She called other managers. She showed her friends and family. People who call about the apartments were told to check out the video on YouTube. It was a hit.

Here is the clincher! All of the people in the apartment profession wanted videos of their communities. I did not charge for doing any of this video work, but now Tromler Construction was being talked about.

“Tom’s a contractor? What does he do?”

The calls came for work in communities that, days earlier, did not know that I existed. These property mangers are now calling me whenever they have something “comes up”. I got my foot in the door by making videos for others as an experiment for my business.

Funny how things work out sometimes.

Here is that first video that I made, in it's original form. It is still being used on Craigslist and still getting leads for Cameron Oaks Apartments. The video has been viewed over 3,150 times over the last 2 years.

Tom - that is very cool.  It's nice how things work out like that.  I will need to check out your post on how to add a video to Craigslist.  At some point, I may try out CL again.

Tom, I am bookmarking this post so I can come back tonight and watch how you added those videos on Craig's list. It's certainly promoted you and Cameron Oaks Apartments.

Thanks Tom. Well I have used many different video editors in the past, I love using Sony Vegas Pro. When I got my HD camera, no one explained the need for a HD editor, so I had to make some changes.

It is worth taking a look at Jerry. Pretty easy to do but the results are great. It will set your ad apart from others in CL.

I can't believe that this is a first experiment test, it is that good! It is no wonder the manager wanted it. Nice marketing on your part. Big question: how did you get your picture on the cover of Vogue? Now that is funny!

Thanks Sandy, it turned out pretty good for a new guy.

Vogue? You don't think that I qualify for the Vogue world? Just Kidding. There is a web site called Photofunia that makes this easy to do.

I appreciate the comment John. I think the value of video is growing. If we can help others with the use of video, maybe we can help ourselves.
