Hulda Crooks Park for Dogs and People Too!
There are many places to go in the Inland Empire but one of the nicest parks is Hulda Crooks Park in Loma Linda, CA. This park has swings, a Jungle Gym, shaded picnic areas with bbq pits, 2 dog parks (small & large dogs), volleyball court, tennis courts, mountain biking and hiking trails leading up to the south end of the city with spectacular views. This park, 19.6 acres, is the largest park in Loma Linda.
Hulda Crooks, from Saskatchewan, Canada, had 23 successful climbs to the top of 14,495-foot Mount Whitney, including her first ascent at age 66 in 1962. She also made one ascent up 12,388-foot Mount Fuji in Japan. In 1987, at age 91, she became the oldest woman to scale the two peaks.
In 1991, she made her last trip up Mount Whitney, which she often called ''my mountain.'' That same year, a peak south of Whitney was named Crooks Peak in her honor after an act of Congress.
Among her long distance achievements included a descent to the floor of the Grand Canyon, and a beginning-to-end, 212-mile hike of the John Muir Trail, from Yosemite to Mount Whitney, a feat which she accomplished over five summers. Huda also jogged, hiked, backpacked, and taught fitness classes until her death. She was a Nutritionist from Loma Linda University and did research for many years even after her retirement.
Hulda Crooks, died in her sleep on Dec.3, 1997at 101 years old.
In 1991, Loma Linda dedicated this park in her name as she was such a great teacher and inspired so many.

*I joined a running group in 1989 called the Loma Linda Lopers and remember Hulda would come on some of the Sunday morning runs/walks and was quite a celebrity. I felt honored to have even met this great lady.
