One of the biggest topics of discussion in Sunriver is the new plans and development for the old Village Mall. Home owners have worries, business owners are concerned and yet there seems to be an underlying excitement.

Meetings are being scheduled, zoning is changing, retail space is being condensed and condos are slated for the new project. The number of condos although some say will be 500 is always subject to change, and certainly will not be completed in one full swoop.

Change is one of the most difficult things we as humans go through in life. It is what we resist the most, we fear and often times look back and say... change is good.

Today a blog that I often read had a comment which appears to be from one of the developers of the new mall called, Village at Sunriver.

Although this plan is full of things you have never seen in Central Oregon, it is still moving forward.

Some of the concerns, high-rise style building - there are not high-rises in Central Oregon. I am not certain on the tallest building in Central Oregon - my guess is there are not many over 4 stories tall. The new Village at Sunriver admits to at least one 5 story building as part of the plan.

Another unknown - underground parking and parking structure, neither are found in Central Oregon. We know that larger cities have these but not Central Oregon.

I promised my readers to give them some sites to review that showed both sides of the story. So, the links are below - please feel free to leave comments with other links too.

Your concerns sound like some of the same concerns The Woodlands had and there's turned out beautiful.  I still think there is some controversy over those high rises though, although they really aren't high rises as I don't think they can go much over the tree-line.  They have made some exceptions which is where the controversy lies I guess.

Thesa - We have the same thing going in our town right now. A large scale development is planned here. Zoning has been changed and the meetings have been scheduled. Many love the idea of the development, which is so large it will be like a town within a town. Due to the fact it will be built on an old abandoned factory site and the tax monies it will bring in. Others are completely against it, for they are afraid it will change the character of our town.

Well.. seems like you continue to have your finger on the pulse of things.

Good post as usual Thesa.  We in the vicinity are particularly interested.

Thesa - From the sounds of it, Sunriver area will find a way to make the new architecture blend in with your beautiful countryside.  As Marchel stated above, we have managed to do that here.

Change is always hard for all parties involved - the fear of the unknown.... but I have always been one to enjoy a good change here & there.  It keeps things interesting.  Good luck with the development outcome.

It is tough to get changes through sometimes, especially in a vacation home area.  Second home owners have opinions but can't vote, so usually try to get their voices heard with letters to the editor and can get a pretty good controversy going!  Often the change is good, and many times it is not.

I just got to spend some time in Sunriver a couple of weeks ago. We had the pleasure of having a a business coach speak to a group of 9 of us for 2 days. The house was great the atmosphere was great . But most of all the education was amazing. We even had a little snow. It didnt stay to long but it was nice. It had been a good 10 years since I was there and I remembered how much I missed it.

I wanted to know do you handle rentals. I would love to contact you in the future when we plan to come up next. Please let me know.

Thank You,

Blair Armstrong

Hopefully they blend the project into a style that matches your area. Change is always hard, but it can be exciting if it is done right
