School Mystery! Can you guess what the heck these things are?

Run area at Thurgood Marshall
This is where we run. My friend Cooper and I. Well, he runs, I walk fast. It is a grassy area that is adjacent to one of North Oxnard's most sought after schools, Thurgood Marshall Elementary School.

Cooper

It is an area that allows him to go at a full gallop and besides that, it is the  "home of the Bulldogs" (see or squint at pic) and I have an American Bull dog. Ergo, this is his home, right? Makes sense to me!

Thurgood Marshall School

So over the past 2-3 months, we (Cooper and I) have been noticing these pillars and construction going on at the school. They kind of looked like shade structures over the parking area, but only in one section. So maybe for just the teacher of the month, principal and staff?what the heck are these1

Then they started appearing over by some lunch benches and over near the playground. So they can't be parking shade. What they heck are they?

what the heck are these2

I had resigned myself to waiting until school started to get a clue to this mystery. Finally the local paper, the Ventura County Star, revealed the long awaited answer.

"The Oxnard School District has been installing solar panels this summer at four schools, adding to a growing list of "green energy" installations at public facilities in the Ventura County region.

In the Oxnard School District, officials expect the solar panels to take a big slice out of the electricity bills for Ramona, Chavez and Marshall elementary schools and Frank Intermediate School. The project, costing up to $4 million, requires no upfront money from the district; yet, it is expected to provide 80 percent of Frank Intermediate School's electricity needs and close to 100 percent of Ramona, Chavez and Marshall elementary schools' energy needs."

Let me repeat, "It will be providing 100% of Marshall's energy needs." I think that is huge!

It went on to say that their strategic placement would also enhance shade at some parking, lunch and play areas. Now how cool is that? Pun intended!

Did you guess what they were before the reveal? If you did, congrats, you are greener than I am!

Any idea as to the ROI?  I frequently see people on their roofs hosing off the solar panels. Is the system self cleaning?

Sandy, since I have wanted solar panels for years I knew exactly what they were! How great that school is using them for power! Wonderful!

I knew what you were talking about before I scrolled down, not because I'm smart. We are seeing solar panels all over the place. Parking lots, Open fields, they must be worthwhile. They are big projects, done by large agencies. Seems to be the wave of the future Sandy.

Hi Sun City, I don't know if they are self cleaning. That would be a good question.

Hi Peg, You're so smart to know. I've wanted solar panels too, but the residential ones look nothing like these, so I had no clue to what they were.

Yes, Tom, you're smart, too, like Peg. I guess I will be taking more notice now and will probably now see them everywhere.

Hey Sandy - I am (inordinately) proud of myself because I did guess that they might be solar panels - how exciting!  As a "green" agent I'm always thrilled when I see communities adopting sustainable energy solutions.  We have many solar, hydro, and wind options in the British Columbia area - but I'll bet solar is a great option for California!  Thanks for sharing this!

At first they looked like bus stops. Glad to know they're solar panels. And you're right, it provides additional benefit: shade!

Hey Karen,  good job on guessing. You should write a blog on the "green" designation. I would love to find out how that is working for you.

Hi Pacita, I thought that too at first, except when later one placed near the playground area. Thanks for stopping by!
