I can't understand the city council plan where I live either.

This is a huge problem all over the country.  You should see what they're doing to all of the coastal cottages here in Rhode Island.  It makes me sick.  Then again, property rights advocates will argue that it is the owners' right to do whatever is allowed by the local agency.  I tend to disagree.  You have to hold your town council, planning, and zoning boards accountable.  A comprehensive plan is a good first step.  Attending your town meetings is a must if you want to preserve your community or initiate a comprehensive community plan.  I recently assisted with stopping a condo complex from being built in my neighborhood.  It can be done!!!

Go Tyghre!!!

Go Edina!!!

I read about this in the paper and viewed the you tube video.  Unfortunately, the builder is within city code and there is nothing that can be done about it - there are no special use permits, easements, or exceptions to any code.  5,500 SF is big compared to 2,800 SF next door, but not a McMansion in terms of a 10,000 SF house.  It's unfortunate for the houses abutting it.  I'm not sure how city code can be changed to accomodate every neighborhood in a city as each street can be unique.  New neighborhoods have a plan, old neighborhoods have remodel/rebuild.

Hi Tyghre - In Northern VA we had have similar problems and enough people pounded the county councils to pass legislation curbing the McMansions by limiting house squarefootage in proportion to the lot and increasing the setback requirements. It can be done; enough people have to get involved.
