Camp SweyolakenNow here's an opportunity that doesn't come around often!  Wood and canvas canoe craftsman and restoration expert Jeanne Bourquin will be the featured presentation at a community dinner at Camp Sweyolaken on September 22, 2011.

I had an opportunity summer before last to take a cruise to Camp Sweyolaken for dinner and a tour, and what a magnificent setting and camp it is.  Truly a gem in a waterfront setting second to none.  It's an exceptional camping opportunity for anyone fortunate enough to participate in any of their varied camping programs. 

Bourquin will offer the history of the wood and canvas canoe as well as tips on restoration and maintenance techniques.  She is currently working with a team of volunteers, teaching them maintenance and restoration techniques on the 22 canoe fleet owned by the camp.

The impressive Camp Sweyolaken fleet consitst of seven war canoes and twelve small canoes dating back as early as 1924.  The majority are wood and canvas construction.

Camp Sweyolaken is a nonprofit summer camp on Coeur d'Alene Lake operated by Camp Fire USA Inland Northwest Council.  Camp Sweyolaken alumni are sponsoring this fundraising event which includes a community dinner with a suggested donation of $30 of which $15 is tax-deductible.

Visitors will meet at the Camp Sweyolaken landing.  Boats to camp will leave at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m.  Visitors will have an opportunity to tour the camp and view the canoes, with dinner beginning at 6:00 p.m. followed by the presentation.
