Will You Lose Your Domain?

I just received this from one of my CyberStars(r) posted on our private listserve:

"I need your help, guys! I had a webmaster a few years ago who left town 'under the cover of dark' so to speak and left me and several others in a real mess with out websites. He let my domain name expire without my knowledge and I cannot get it back. If anyone can make a suggestion, please email me off serve."

It might be too late for my CyberStar(r), but here's what you should do when registering a domain to make sure it doesn't happen to you: be sure that you are listed as the administrative and billing contact. That way, you will always know when the domain is about to expire.

If you already have a domain, and it was registered by someone else, you might want to go to WhoIs.com and check your registration information.

Allen, I went round and round with someone on this very topic. They still insist that this "isn't true.". That's ok. Be an idjut. My domain is mine and I can take it anywhere. I hate to see the look of shock on this persons face if his domain name is ever gone as you described above.

Hi Allen - this is so basic and yet so easily overlooked because most don't know to do this. I had someone clue me in years ago about this, and I fought hard to be listed as the admin and billing contact on mine. I got it listed that way, but it was a difficult struggle back then with the person who set up my first website.

I could not agree more with your post - we need to make sure to stay on top of all this stuff and make sure we protect ourselves.
