Plant Bulbs Now for Spring ColorNot only is it the perfect time to get those fall projects done for your North Shore home, but it is also the best time to start thinking about planting bulbs in anticipation of the great colors of springtime.

The best selection of spring flowering bulbs are just arriving from Holland to garden centers across the North Shore and are guaranteed to be fresh.

You will want to get them now for the best selection and then wait until the beginning of October when soil temperatures drop to plant in your garden. However, be sure to get them in the ground before the first freeze.

After going dormant in the warm summer soil, bulbs will then produce new roots every fall in the cooler soil. Of course they won’t flower until spring, but you can plan for a magnificent showing of colors to boost your homes’ curb appeal come spring.

Planting bulbs is fairly simple. Plant each bulb at a depth that is four times the diameter of the bulb. Fertilize with nitrogen and phosphorous every fall and every spring as bulbs are known as heavy feeders; this bulb fertilizer is easily found in the garden section of your home improvement store.

If your yard is prone to damage by local wildlife, daffodils may be the wisest choice as they are known as animal resistant bulbs. If you just cannot resist the lure of tulips, be sure to protect them with an animal repellent.

If you want to get the best show come springtime, look for tulips that have multiple flowers or stems to them. For a layered look, you can even plant them at slightly different depths to have them bloom at different times to guarantee the longest bloom time possible.

If you are looking to sell your North Shore home this next spring, a nice full bloom of bulbs will definitely give your home the color and curb appeal that will have buyers wanting to see what pleasant surprises await them inside your home. Marla, this is great information!  It has been over 20 years since I have planted bulbs in the fall so this is a great refresher course!  Daffodils are hard to beat, I agree!
