In The Spirit Of Peace, Understanding And A Safe America

On September 10 -11, 2011 the radio, newspapers and television stations devoted countless hours remembering the horror of 9/11/2001 and honoring the innocent victims of terrorism .

21 Prince William County residents lost their life in the attack on the Pentagon. There is a peaceful memorial to them at Freedom Park, Prince William County Government Center in Woodbridge.

The base of the fountain is in the shape of the Pentagon, the two fountains represent the World Trade Center, the site is flanked by Pennsylvania flagstone and there is a piece of stone from the Pentagon. There was a memorial service there this past weekend.



There was a second event that went unnoticed in the local media. Members of three religious congregations met on Saturday night in the spirit of peace, respect for each other's belief and a commitment to work for a safe and secure America. They were
  • Congregation Ner Shalom
  • Dar-Alnoor Islamic Community Center
  • Covenant Presbyterian Church
Clergy addressed our faith similarities, we prayed in all three faiths and socialized at dinner. We were joined by county elected officials as well as members of our police and fire departments.

Arthur and I came away with one sense. We are all loyal Americans with a single purpose - peace and security for all of us. There was an initial event earlier this year.

We are excited about the prospect of future interaction.

Hi Karen - I enjoyed reading your post.  I remember a greater sense of unity just after 9/11 than we seem to have today.  There is too much divisiveness and exclusion today.  We will have to work to get it back.

Karen, that's a really beautiful memorial, and cleverly designed to capture the events of that day so well.

I'm happy that so many could find a way to come together in memory of the day--I think, despite the tragic events, 9/11 will always be remembered for the showing the best of America, not as our weakness or failure.

So proud of those who gave their lives that day and since, and this is a great honor to them.
