In the age of “going green” conserving energy has become more important to a lot of people. Many tips cost a substantial amount of money to do so I thought it would be helpful to list some that cost little or even no money to implement.
· Don’t drive aggressively – accelerating quickly, braking and then accelerating quickly again uses more gas.
· Install a programmable thermostat in your home. It can be set to fluctuate a couple degrees (hotter or cooler depending on the season) for when you’re not home to conserve energy.
· Check your water heater to see what it’s set on. Lower it to 120 degrees if it’s higher.
· Plug TV’s and DVD players into a power strip. Not only will it protect them if you get a storm but, when you’re not using them you can turn the power strip off and save energy.
· Wash and dry clothes only when you have a full load.
· Use your dishwasher to wash dishes only and then open the door to allow them to air dry.
· Look for the ENERGY STAR label on products such as home appliances and light bulbs. Products with this label have been approved by both the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Other “day to day” suggestions: be sure to close the refrigerator/freezer door tightly, don’t leave any doors or windows open when the air conditioning/heat are running and turn lights off in any rooms that you aren’t occupying.
