High Speed Thrills At BayFair on Mission Bay This Weekend!

This weekend is the Bayfair Festival Powerboat Races and those around Mission Bay are in for a real treat. The Bayfair is a part of the Fleet Week 16 day celebration honoring our military. Normally I would have photos here when I post local events but my iMac is in the Apple Hospital getting a new heart (hard drive.) and a complete diagnostic check up of the logic board and I am composing this post on my iPad using html. I tell everyone about the great service at Apple but that is a post for another day.

These turbine powered boats reach speeds of up to 200 miles an hour and will do that on the two and half mile long straights of Mission Bay. And it was announced that the Unlimited Hydroplanes are back this year after they disappeared two years ago. They will be racing Saturday with the championship determined in a race on Sunday afternoon. There will be a dozen races happening continuously over the weekend. Ever hear of drag boat racing? Well it is a sight to see and also on the schedule will be the Grand Prix West. The best locations to take in the action would be Fiesta Island, Crown Point and Ski Beach. But come early, the best spots will be taken by the start time of 7:00AM. If I were picking the best spot it would be a ski beach because there will be other entertainment set up ther along food vendors.

Date:Saturday Sept 17th and Sunday Sept 18th
Time: 7:00AM to 6:00PM
Where: Mission Bay Admission Ranges from $20 to $45 ( Admission is Free for All Active Military and Children under 12 ) If you would like more information go to sandiegobayfair.org.

Good evening, William. That's fast. I have done 90 in a boat and that was all I wanted to do...

Hi Peter and Linda,

Very cool. That is so great of you to offer. I should have the computer ( photos ) next week so I will download the ones I take this weekend. But for sure having this one definitely will qualify this as a photo blog, :-)

Hi Will, that is a very high speed and I would be hanging on for dear life.  The sound of those engines will be powerful.  Nice post.

Hi Micahel, I get the idea that these boats are not for the faint of heart. Speed demons would love them. One needs to hope that at that speed , there are no bugs in the air. :-)

William,

I'm not sure, but I think hydroplane racing has more deaths than any other racing.

Hi Bill, Somehow this does surprise me. The speed is unbelievable. I did see photos of one that went straight up in the air and the driver was killed when the boat landed on him upside down.

I can only imagine one thing more thrilling that riding one of the air boats at 200 mph, and that would be to be riding a parasail behind one at that speed.   Why is it I am getting a vision of your mouth wide open trying to scream, but nothing is coming out. . .LOL

Hi Myrl, I have a photo of me in the grips of a bear and I suspect that was a silent scream too! LMAO.

What a great event for the military men and women and their family; and nice that there is no charge. I just can't imagine being in a boat at that speed. Well for one thing I would not be in the boat :-)

Good Morning Rebecca, I would have agree that there is for most of us a thrill just to see but not necessarily to get in one of those boats.

In the grips of a bear?  I would have loved seeing that.  Now any photo of that event, would emit silent screams, unless it was video with sound...LOL  I won't even ask how it was that you placed yourself in a situation that allowed it to happen. . .BUT suspect alcohol MUST have been involved:-)

Hi Myrl, Just got back from one of the most fun events I have been to in a long time. What an authentic effort.  The Old Poway Rendezvous and it was amazing. While I was there I was engaged in a conversation with one of the Mountain men  about a view property he wants to sell. Before  I left he had introduced me to another couple thinking about moving to Colorado. Woopee! My time there was fully justified. Wit till you see the potroast photo this guy was cooking. Food after my my own heart. Somewhere in a previous life, I must have been one of these characters. I loved it all!

Hi William, hope you were able to go and will be postign some photos later on.  I remember Stefano Casiraghi, husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco, was killed during a speed boat accident, anything that can go perform at that kind of speed is definitely not without danger to life and limb.

Hi Sylvia, I am planning to go tomorrow and I Will get those photos.  I was able to drop by to day the the funnest event I have been to. It was the Poway Rendezvous and the setting was back into the early 1800's and life of the inhabitants  back in Old Wild West. It was so much fun and the authenticity was awesome.

William - I am convinced in at least a couple of our previous lives, we must have rubbed elbows:-)  That whole Wild Wild West era resonates with me at a primal level.  I think it had to of been at least 2 short-lived lives, because there were the perils of gunsmoke, bears, cholera, etc.  Times were not easy, but they certainly weren't boring. . . LOL

I can see you salivating over that Pot Roast at the Poway Rendezvous for sure!
