The 2007 Lacey Military Family Support March, sponsored by the Hawks Prairie Rotary Club had a record turn-out with over 2000 people attending. The event is in its 5th year and has raised a total of over $200,000. The money is used to support and sponsor children' Christmas presents, college scholarships, food banks, children's eyeglasses and child care.

Supporters meet at the Lacey Wal Mart parking lot, where sponsoring businesses are set-up with booths, offering free refreshments, drawings, games and food. The carnival atmosphere is fun for young and old, with a bouncing castle for the kids, an appearance of the Sonics Squatch, Big Band music, and an exposition of vintage WWII memorabilia. Marchers registered for a fee of $5.00 or more if they chose to give more. After the opening ceremony the parade was led by a Lacey fire engine, the Grand Marshall and the Highland Bag Pipers. The march led the supporters on a one mile walk down Lacey streets, where they ultimately ended back up at the Wal Mart parking lot.

It was great to see the local support for our military personnel, despite the divisive views on the Iraq war. Occasions such as these are a great opportunity to let our military personnel know how much their commitment, service and sacrifice means to the community and that their families are supported and cared for.

What a great community event.  No matter what one's political views, our military deserves all the support we can give them!  My Exchange Club is having a dinner next week honoring all of our current military and past vets.  It is always a special night.

Diane,

I totally agree with you. Our military doesn't have a say in their missions. They serve their country and don't get to pick their commanders in charge. I loved hearing about your Exchange Club dinner. It's great when organizations remember to honor vets, soldiers and military family members.
