OK, I admit I'm feeling a little light hearted. Our daughter was married this past weekend. We had a wonderful time at the wedding and for all appearances the happy couple are still enjoying being married.

One of the things that happened during the "dress the bride" portion of the  "getting ready for the wedding" last hours was the discovery that the bouquets were held together by rubber bands. Being the Mom of the Bride didn't stop me from also being a home stager who is simply ALWAYS thinking about the business of home staging. After admiring the lovely flowers and discovering the "secret" about how they were all held together -- rubber bands I began to think of several ways I use rubber bands to perform my job.

Rubber Band BallHere are five of them:

1. Hold the page in my planner (this works for all books)

2. We place a band so that it is centered on the open top of a paint can and goes down the sides to wrap around the bottom. This is perfect for tapping the paint brush against the band and not getting paint all gooped up in the rim of the paint can.

3.  A fat rubber band placed around the lid, grasped firmly and twisted like you mean it on a stubborn bottle (like Liquid Nails) will help loosen it for opening.

4. Wrapped around the end of my sun visor a couple of rubber bands hold my various receipts for the day until I get back to the office to put them in the pile of items to be filed. (Or on my good days are actually entered and filed in a timely manner.)

5. Hold fabric, linens, draperies, ribbons and any number of other staging items where I want them to stay. Some  times these  rubber bands are supplemented  with straight pins, safety pins, ribbon, wire, and or whatever it takes to get the effect desired.

You knew I would have to do it. I'm throwing in number 6. On a few occasions I've used a rubber band to get my hair out of my eyes and off my face so I can finish the task at hand. Yeah, I know, I know rubber bands are not good for your hair. But, they are good for holding things (even your hair in a pinch.)

41 Comments on Five Ways To Use A Rubber Band

Yvonne, I think you might think as a home stager a little too much. haha  I am happy the wedding went so nicely! Congratulations on adding another home staging furniture mover to the family

10/26/2007 07:33 AM by Asheville Stagers- Leslie Godbold (Asheville Stagers - "We do more than make pretty places!")

My goodness, Yvonne - you are such a fount of information.  Uh .. you forgot one .. how about using a rubber band as a "tool" to shoot at your own kid in a movie theater who won't stop talking to his rather loud, almost obnoxious friend who is sitting right next to him!  (Not that I've ever done that, mind you, it's just an idea.)  Thanks for sharing.  - Calie

P.S.  How about a post on how to stage a wedding?

10/26/2007 08:17 AM by Calie Waterhouse - Chandler AZ Homes (John Hall & Assoc)

Leslie, You are so right! I actually chided myself over that issue on that very day. :)

Calie, I also left off the one where I wrap a rubber band around my wrist because I may use it later and then find that I keep messing with it all day because it has a calming influence. But, I know what you mean. While I have never used a rubber band to thwack anyone (especially not my hubby while I'm in a giggly mood) I can see that there may be some merit to the possibility of rubber band wars. Oops.

I love reading your blogs Yvonne.  Great tips.  Congratulations to your daughter and new son-in-law.  You should post a few photos for us to see.  Oh, and don't forget to include one of the Mother of the Bride!

10/26/2007 11:01 AM by Charlene Storozuk - Burlington Ontario Home Stager (Dezigner Digz)

Now that many states are passing laws to stop people from talking on a cell phone unless it is a  handsfree phone, I thought I would pass along another tip for rubber band use. A rubber band can also serve as a "hands free cell phone" device. Just strap the phone on your head using the rubber band.

10/26/2007 11:32 AM by James Frazier (A Defined Design)

Congrats on the wedding. And thanks for good ideas. I don't think I even own a package of rubber bands- I'll have to get some.

10/26/2007 12:45 PM by Leslie Prest, Prest Realty, Payson, AZ

Yvonne, you forgot the most important use for rubber bands.  Make your fingers look like a gun and wrap a rubber band  around the tip of index finger,   over the thumb, then hook it onto the little finger.  Then point and shoot!  Next stop, the principals office!

Great uses for rubber bands! I particularly like the paint can use... I had never thought of doing that before, but can guarantee that I will next time.

Yvonne-

Cute post.  Now I know why I have this compulsion to save every rubber band I come across!

When I lived in Pittsburgh, PA and taught Kindergarten- some of the kids called them GUM Bands! They did not laugh at my Texas accent, so I was not about to say anything about the gum bands.....

Yvonne...here's the picture in my head for your #4.  Gave me a laugh AFTER I reread it two or three times.  Sun Visor, on your head, not in your car, stuffed full of receipts as you walk out to the car and then back into the next store.

I buy them in bulk and never seem to be able to find one in the house when I need one.

Thanks for the post and James that's another interesting picture to imagine! Wonder if our lawmakers have considered it???

10/26/2007 08:06 PM by Ginger Foust - Home Stager - Oakhurst CA Foust- Dream Interior Redesign & Staging (Dream Interior Redesign & Staging Oakhurst CA)

Charlene, Thank you so much. Thanks for the kind words and the well wishes. Maybe I'll get some of the photos from the wedding up this weekend. As you can imagine I'm in a bit of a catch-up mode these days.

LOL James! Here in Arizona we can still use our cell phones for talking while driving. What we are no longer allowed to do is send text messages. So do you think if one banded the phone just right we could use our tongues to send the text instead? Now that is an ugly picture.

Leslie, I'm getting the shakes just thinking about living my life without rubber bands. Yes, you must pop down to the store soon. You will find that a good package of bands can be your best friend.

Terry, As much as I love my rubber bands I've never figured out how to do the gun shooting trick. I ALWAYS, without fail shoot myself instead of the intended victim. Self inflicted rubber band wounds are hard to explain. BTW, your photo is beautiful. It is nice to see you after all this time!

Rick, How wonderful that you found a useful tip here. You know how we home stagers are -- we aim to please. Then of course see my response to Terry (above.) My aim can cause me a bit of pain at times.  Thanks for the comment.

Kathy, I know what you mean. I think rubber bands are just plain fun to have around. They are quite handy. Makes me wonder who invented them and if that person knew how valuable they would become. Now thas sumpin alz ahs wundrun bout -- ya'll thank Texans hauv accents?

Oh Ginger, You have succeeded in cracking me up. I could one-up Minnie Pearl. Just think a hat simply full of receipts. Just to add to your mental picture -- my sun visor is pink and has (well, lets make this real fun) the words, "Ask me about Home Staging." Oh gosh, I have got to calm down now. But I'm still giggling.  What do you buy in bulk -- sun visors or rubber bands? (Snort -- again!) We should just tell James to use his sun visor to hold his cell phone to his head. Good grief, is this fatigue or am I having fun?

10/26/2007 09:39 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Yvonne, Laughter at this hour...I might never get to sleep tonight.  Where can we order those visors with "Ask me about staging" imprinted...what an idea!  Now I'm the one snorting and James,...with his new younger hairdo what a sight!  Thanks!

BTW...bulk rubber bands! :-))) but I did buy three visors last month, all on sale.  Here is sunny CA we even wear them in the snow and I know that you AZ folks wear them year round too.

10/26/2007 09:59 PM by Ginger Foust - Home Stager - Oakhurst CA Foust- Dream Interior Redesign & Staging (Dream Interior Redesign & Staging Oakhurst CA)

Thanks for the compliment Yvonne.  One of these days you and I will get together and I'll give you step by step instructions on how to design and use a rubber band finger gun!

10/26/2007 10:02 PM by Terry Haugen STAGE it RIGHT! 321-956-2495 (Stage it Right!)

Ginger, I love to wear hats. I have a small collection of them trying to attack me when I walk in the closet. I do have a couple of sun visors which were my moms. Perhaps we should go into business together and produce clothes (including sun visors) for home stagers. You think? We do have our share of sun here. I love it!

Terry, I mean it. You are very attractive. OK, when and where do I get my lessons? No, wait, I just remembered every time someone tries to teach me to make one of those guns I regret it. We will just get together for iced tea. BTW. did you think about using a rubber band to open your favorite drink?

10/26/2007 10:18 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

OK - There's just way too much fun going around A/R tonight.  Let's be serious here ... Stop laughing, Yvonne, I'm talking to you!  What are some SERIOUS uses for the all-powerful rubber bands?

Hmmm.....

  1. Tie back a shower curtain
  2. Use to "gather" towels
  3. Make-shift hand cuffs
Woops ... lost my train of thought.  I'll have to try again later. :)

10/26/2007 10:44 PM by Calie Waterhouse - Chandler AZ Homes (John Hall & Assoc)

Oh Mrs. Waterhouse, You have made me snort some more. What am I to do with you? Earlier today I realized there is one more way to use rubber bands which I haven't done in a while. Remember when we used to slip the bands together to make the large circle of bands which we used for what we called "Chinese Jump Ropes"? We did all the hop, jump and skipping we could do to a rhythmic chant. But you, Calie, have the topper -- make-shift hand cuffs, indeed! Alright, I'm calming down. No, I'm not -- I'm still snickering. Whoo Hoo!

10/26/2007 11:06 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Open my favorite drink Yvonne?  I only drink beer that requires a good old fashioned church key to open it.  None of that twist off stuff for me!  So you drink tea, I'll drink beer, and teach you the rubber band gun trick.

10/27/2007 08:07 PM by Terry Haugen STAGE it RIGHT! 321-956-2495 (Stage it Right!)

Terry, Just think. I learned something new tonight. I thought all of them twisted off. See what I know about it? I'm being very bad tonight and have Coca-Cola in hand.

10/27/2007 09:43 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

I am wearing 2 rubber bands as we speak (aka....elastics for all our New Englanders):

One in my hair, One on my wrist (for avoidance therapy). I am waiting to find a "really big one" for my head and cell phone usage! (thanks James!!)

10/28/2007 03:25 AM by Nora Marek (321)795-8761~ Melbourne Home Staging (Home Stager Brevard County, Florida)

Kathleen, I know exactly what you mean. My dad was scheduled for surgery and I happened to be in the room when all the techs came in to go over the last minute questions to the patient. Of course, one of the questions had to do with allergies. Dad didn't mention anything so I spoke up about his latex allergy. After the entire room went into a tizzy Dad said he didn't think it would be that big deal. I reminded him they were cutting him open and would be placing their gloved hands all over his "inside" parts. He grimly agreed. Techs ran and the surgery proceeded without a hitch. One good thing for you Kathleen is you don't have to go through the misery of shooting yourself every time you try to find a new victim.

Nora, Perhaps we too could go into business together. What type of design do you think would be best for the cell phone holding elastics? Who cares about better mouse traps? We have beautiful cell phone holding head straps. Should net us millions. You think we should share with James?

10/28/2007 07:32 AM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Okay everyone, I missed out on this great post with its very fun comments.  James yours was hysterical, and Calie do you use the heavy-duty kind for hand-cuffs?  Ladies, do you remember using elastics (rubber bands) to hold up your knee high stockings when the elastic was shot?  That red ring didn't go away for days.  Betty

Yvonne, congratulations on the fabulous wedding day.  Are you able to post some pics or maybe email me a few.  Would love to see you with the whole family.  Betty

10/28/2007 04:33 PM by Betty Haney (Haney Consulting)

James - I had to look at the date of your comment because yesterday, I look outside to see what my little girl is doing and she has her cell phone under the strap of her skateboard helmet. Yep - great minds think alike but you beat her to it of course :)

Yvonne - brilliant! Now I am thinking of all the ways I have used a rubber band on a Sunday afternoon whilst the outdoors boasts 78 degrees and beckons my participation...but I had to let you know your post is that good!

Wait...I have to add something...I have 3 types of rubber bands and I can't believe how much effort I put into choosing the right rubber band for the right job :)

Yvonne -- Loved the rubberband ideas.  I have been wracking my brain trying to come up with some new ones...but I can't....you got them all covered.  The wedding sounds beautiful....pictures would be nice!

Yvonne - I am short on time,so I haven't read the comments (if this one is already here, I apologize).  You can use them to shoot at the foreheads of those who argue with you over whether staging is of value.  ;)

10/28/2007 10:24 PM by Kimberly Wester - NW Indiana Stager (Details Staging and Redesign)

Betty, While I don't remember using my elastics for socks I have left one or two which were too small for my wrist until it actually hurt to take them off. Bad idea! I had hoped to get the photos up this weekend but life keeps getting in my way. We went today to a baby shower for my cousin and his wife. It is amazing how one little celebration can take up the entire day. Well, don't tell anyone . . . we went shopping after the shower. Then . . . we went to dinner at a great Rib Shack with our daughter and son-in-law and granddaughter. Great day, but I'm tired.

Sheron, Toooooo funnnnny! I would have loved to have seen your granddaughter with her excellent blue tooth substitute. Choosing the correct rubber band for the job is very important! I'm glad you take your time. :)

Judy, Goes to prove we are indeed a wacky bunch; right? I see some pretty busy days ahead for at least the first part of the week. I'll try to get the wedding === and even the baby shower up soon. Then everyone will know what a wild and crazy bunch we really are. Thanks for stopping in.

Kim, Oh now you have really made me laugh! You were the first to mention this all important use of the rubber band. Kind of makes you wish you could have a double barrel sometimes; right?

10/28/2007 11:16 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Yvonne -- Rubberbands make great marketing tools.  Especially when they are used to secure our business cards to candy bars before dropping them into Trick or Treaters' bags!

10/31/2007 11:32 AM by Judy Kincaid, Tampa Home Stager (Destined To Sell)

Oh my gosh Judy, You are really on a roll gal. Now that is an idea which could take off. I can just imagine. If this Haloween is anything like the last 2 we've experienced in this local than we don't stand a ghost of a chance of handing out any of our cards. It seems the princesses, ghouls, pirates and other fair creatures never make it up the hill to our house. We have not had even one trick or treater since we moved here. Oh well.

10/31/2007 12:31 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Julianna, We do that too. We hold scarves onto existing rods sometimes with rubber bands. We end up with straight pins helping out sometimes. We have also used rubber bands with simple towel folds. You know, so the band doesn't show. Thanks for stopping in!

11/13/2007 09:31 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

I like it. . . you are always thinking.  Maybe the letters beside stagers' names should be OCD?

Kim, LOL you are so right. We all need the designation OCD! At this moment my desk will not allow me to claim that prize. Thanks for stopping in.

11/21/2007 04:25 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

here is another use.  When my mother comes to visit us.... she is forever drinking a glass of ice water. I'm forever picking up glasses that are lying around and putting them in the dishwasher.  She puts a rubber band around her glass that she is using at the moment.... that way, I'm not always removing it!

Congratulations on the addition to the family!

11/23/2007 08:20 PM by Nancy Morrish, Stage Tucson! (Stage Tucson! Professional Home Staging)

Nancy, Your addition to the list is one which I've never heard before. It is absolutely fantastic! This is certain to become a new trick in our home. My family is always complaining that I put their drinking glasses in the dishwasher before they are done with their drinks. I hope I can figure a way to get a rubber band on a coffee mug. My handsome coffee drinker tells visitors to hang on to their mugs if they hope to keep them through an entire serving. :)

Thanks for the well wishes concerning our new son-in-law.
