My First Thought Was... Why Am I Getting All This Hate Mail ???

By
Real Estate Agent with New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County

I was just making a comment on another post about something that happened to me years ago.  As I finished it, a friend suggested to make it a post... all by itself.  So that's what I'm going to do.

Yes, it was many years ago... perhaps 1996.  I had just got my first ancient computer.  It might have been a 286, I think.  Very little memory, but it worked !   Now that I could get online, the only thing I had ever really heard about, was America Online... AOL.  So, right away... I joined AOL.

I was just getting acquainted with the entire email system... when the first emails started coming in.  OMG... I was horrified.  Absolutely HORRIFIED !  There they were... in the "new email" box... standing straight up... right there in the middle of the screen. My first emails.

As they came in, one by one, I deleted them... without reading them.  I thought it was such an awful thing.  How could "they" allow something like this to happen ?  I remember a friend who was more computer savvy asked my why I was upset.  I told her... "every single email I get is labelled as "hate mail."  I am even afraid to open them, so I just delete them."

So... my friend looked at my emails... and there it was... hate mail... marked plainly... right at the end of every email.  Only... they did not spell out "hate mail."  They abbreviated it... html.   My friend almost fell on the floor laughing.

I thought html meant it was "hate mail."  Talk about feeling realy, really DUMB !  Yikes... there I was... the "hate mail Queen of Cleveland."

Hi Adele:  I have been lucky with the headlines, I agree.  I went to the doctor on Friday, and she gave me lots of stuff to take.  My voice is slowly coming back... but I am not really well yet.  Thanks for stopping by... I'm glad I made you smile.  Keep up the good work you are doing on your points !

Hi Again, Sandy:  Well, yes... I must admit I started rather slowly.  But I still have so much to learn.  I still fumble with trying to insert pictures, and have yet to figure out how to get links into my posts, too.  Some day I will get the hang of it all.  Thanks so much for visiting... :)

Hi Sandy:  Slowly but surely I am getting the hang of some of this techie stuff.  I just keep working on it, and reading the posts of all the Active Rainers who so kindly share their knowledge.  Thanks for your comments...

Hi Debra:  Yes, the silly thing about my story, is that it is all true.  I just could not, for the life of me, figure out exactly who was so angry at me that they would send me all this "hatemail."  Then, thankfully, someone clued me in.  Thanks for commenting...

Hi Carol:  Yes, I have grown, and learned... but there are still too many things to try and learn to get better at this... and too little time to do it in.  And, gee, it would also be nice if I could get a closing once in a while.

Hi Joddie:  Thanks.  I really have no problem whatsoever admitting how totally un-techie I used to be.  And, I honestly thought, or assumed, that html was obviously a shortened version of "hate mail."  Silly Me !  Thanks so much for visiting and commenting.

I still have that old aol email account. Of course, I give it out when I have to give an email and I know the result will be junk mail. So in effect, I guess it is my hate mail account. HA! ;) Hope you are feeling better today!
