Lions Club in Conroe Helps the CommunityRight here in Conroe there is an absolutely amazing thing going on. It's called the Conroe Noon Lions Club. Many of you reading this may not know of the history of the Lions Clubs and aside from a collection box for Eyeglasses seen here or there you may not be aware of the work of this incredible organization. I say this because a few short years ago I was ignorant of most of this and am now proud to be a member and a small part of the Conroe Noon Lions for the past few years.

A Brief History of Lions Clubs International

In 1917, Melvin Jones, a Chicago business leader, told members of his local business club they should reach beyond business issues and address the betterment of their communities and the world. His group agreed, held an organizational meeting in June, 1917, in Chicago. The new group took the name of one of the invited groups, the "Association of Lions Clubs".

In 1925, Helen Keller attended the Lions Clubs International Convention and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness."

Today Lions Clubs International has grown to over 46,000 clubs worldwide.

What the Lions are doing in Conroe and worldwide

The Conroe Noon Lions Club has grown steadily since it's inception in 1939 to become one of the top ten largest Lions Clubs in the World. The Conroe Noon Lions offers all business people the opportunity to give something back to Conroe and the World. From involving members in projects as local as cleaning up an area park or as far-reaching as bringing sight to the world's blind, Lions clubs have always embraced those committed to building a brighter future for their community.

This past week at our meeting we received a small thank you card from Benevolent Missions International (BMI) whose mission is "...providing needed ophthalmic care to the underserved". The letter was a thank you note read aloud. In the thank you note it mentioned making a mission trip to Fiji...which is due west of Texas by about 10,000 miles! The organization also thanked the Conroe Noon Lions for our donation to them and how much the contribution meant to them and how it helped them cover the cost of shipping for needed vision equipment to the island.
