Dry Rot Water Damaged Post in Cameron Park Apartment Community
The damage caused by water and soil to a deck can lead to problems to the structure. Water and soil up against a wood post for an extended period of time can lead to dry rot and the softening and loss of good wood.
This picture shows what a deck post can look like after a few years of rot due to soil contact and water. This is not safe. This post is the corner post which holds up two deck, one on top of the other. If you are experiencing this sort of damage to your deck, consider contacting someone with experience in this type of repair.

Tom, If I saw this type of dry rot water damage, I would contact a contractor like yourself to fix it quickly before I had some serious problems. I would also inform my sellers to make those needed repairs before we listed their homes too.
The owner probably thought they were fine, because there is a concrete block below... but just little bit UNDER the surrounding soil. This looks like a collapsed deck waiting to happen.
Repairing before getting to market would be good Jerry. Can you imagine a potential buyer seeing this? I'll be next to my phone waiting for your call! :)
It's certainly not pretty is it Sally? The deck had already started to sink, the tenants were concerned about the decking being "bouncy". I'm glad they called me.
Holy cow. That's an accident waiting to happen. Hope that the owners have a significant amount of homeowners insurance to cover the absolute worst that can happen to anyone who is injured (or killed) if the deck collapses as a result. But better yet, I hope they took immediate action to resolve this life-threatening structural damage.

Yikes! It looks like someone was about ready to take a tumble down the hill. I'm surprised they let this get so badly damaged before getting it fixed.
It does look a little scary doesn't it Doug. Delay in repairs? See it all the time.

We got it repaired the same day, I could not sleep knowing that is wasn't done Pacita.
This is not safe!..duh you think?
You have the best photos explaining your posts. Thanks for always sharing. Water rot and termite damage can look similar.
Margaret
Thanks Margaret. Whyy did it take so long for others to realize it is unsafe.
The damage from water and termites can appear the same from a distance, both can be equally bad.
