In the Gutter

By

The gutter, a word often associated with negative connotations. As in lying in the gutter, which by the way was, according to Oscar Wilde, a place where some folks prefer look at the stars. Really the lowly gutter is an important part of a drainage system. Its job is to simply collect water and divert it away from where it is not desirable to some where that is at least more preferred.

Most every house has several gutters and downspouts to collect the water running off the roof. The gutter system is vitally important to draining the massive quantity of water that falls on to the homes roof. Without the gutter the water would drain next to the foundation which often over time can lead to leaks in the basement.Gutter on a window frame

Now I was wondering, what do you suppose this gutter was intended to do? Perhaps it's a misplaced flower box.

That is exactly what it looks like!  I expected geraniums or some other flower to be popping up out of there. I always enjoy your blog. Hope you have a wonderful week ahead! Cheers!

Does not look very functional, does it? Maybe a bird bath or a planter like you say!

I once showed a contemporary home in Southern MD that HAD NO GUTTERS.  In keeping with the simplistic design, no doubt.

What the house did have was serious erosion around the house where rain water washed down and dripped onto the ground within 6 inches of the house.

Fortunately, there was no basement.

Our buyer wasn't interested.

....Experience Isn't Expensive.... It's Priceless!

Good morning James,

The gutters in Dallas finally got a work out last night...huge storms rolled through with a heavy deluge and hail.  Although we could have done without the severity of the onslaught, we welcome the rain!

That's not a gutter, it's a very small walkout.

Jim maybe a "bumper?"  You don't want some racoon running up the roof and running into your window.

Easy one - that is a paper towel dispenser for the roof repair guy to be able to wipe off all the roof tar from his blade.  C'mon, everyone can see that.

Honestly, don't YOU appreciate a paper towel dispenser where and when you need one?

Ellie, Thanks so much, the same back to you.

Gary, Can't figure this one out myself.

Lenn, I have never understood the absence of gutters. As we both know aesthetics almost always wins over function.

Lisa, Good news for you and the people of Texas.

Don, A Mai Tai planter :)

Reuben, For the hamster :)

Charlie, Or some pesky squirrel :)

Jay, Oh for sure I do. I can't understand why I didn't see it before.
