Important Considerations When Branding

Like many of you I have been "Branding" myself since deciding to become a Realtor. What makes you stand out, what can you do that others aren't. For those just entering into the Branding arena, and it takes on the same characteristics no matter what business you are in, there are some important things to consider before choosing your Brand. Take some time and do not rush into choosing how and what is going to be YOU out there.

Loreena YeoFirst and foremost you need to know, and be honest here, who are you? Your brand should be a part of you, it should project who you are when you are being you. A perfect example of what I am talking about is Loreena Yeo from Frisco Tx. A quote from Loreena's bio "God and family come first above all else and my career is a blessing to everything I do in business and in life." Loreena's company name...3:16 Team Realty, when you see Loreena's logo you know right away something important about who Loreena is. Do you think that consumers who live a strong faith based life might choose Loreena simply because of that obvious bond they share?

Cheryl RitchieAnother fine example of what I am talking about is Cheryl Ritchie from southern Maryland, take a look at her logo and her tag, "Retrieve Golden Results with Cheryl Ritchie." Again, you don't even need to meet Cheryl and you can tell that she has golden retrievers and is a dog lover. If there is a client that is searching for a Realtor in southern Maryland who is an animal lover do you think that Cheryl might get a closer look simply because of her clever branding...I do.

One thing to consider is using your geographic location, can you incorporate something about that location with something that tells who you are in your brand?

Kim Sellers Lake Arrowhead RealtyTake a look at Kim Sellers "Arrowhead Lifestyles" website. Her tag Lake Arrowhead Lifestyles says alot about what kind of life one might expect if choosing to live in Lake Arrowhead. Just from the tag, pic and website I can pretty much tell alot about the Lake Arrowhead lifestyle, and Kim. Golf, boating, fine living, her tag and logo tell the whole story.

Real Estate CafeTake a look at this logo from Mel Peterson in Oregon, right off the bat I can get a feel for who Mel is and the down to earth person that she is. Yet Mel does something that I love in branding, she shows a playful, shocking side to her personality in her blog title, "The Naked Blogger". Love that title, as those of you who know me know, I love that shocking aspect of branding. When someone mentions a blog they read on a site titled "The Naked Blogger" how much you wanna bet I am going to remember that title. Chances are pretty good that I am.

Studmuffin MediaTwo things that are standards and seem to hold peoples attention are shock, and humor. if you shock someone or make them laugh, they are more likely to remember you. Of course the shock aspect needs to be within tasteful parameters. Again, those of you that know me know I started a business a while back, do you remember the name of that company, probably not, because the name I choose was boring, boring, boring. The old name, Social Media Consulting, yawn, wasn't getting much traction after a few months, the new name..Studmuffin Media, after a week it has generated more buzz than the old name. The best part is there is a woderful funny story behind how the name came to be, people love the name, the story, and they remember that, and I am much more energized because it fits me and my personality. Humorous, shocking, with a bit of smart alec thrown in, that's me. It is so much easier to promote oneself when you are simply being yourself. If you are a shock and awe type of person, I wouldn't go with the unicorns and puppies logo, and visa versa, shy and quiet, don't go with the Studmuffin example.

This brings me to an important point, if you don't have the personality to pull it off, don't do it. Keep it real so to speak, be true to yourself and you will be more comfortable in representing yourself. Choosing something that you love gives you an instant connecting point in a subject that you enjoy and have some knowledge in. Keep in mind that your brand will need to be promoted, choose something that is easily promoted, treat your business just as a large corporation would, promotion will bring prospects, prospects that can convert to business, business that converts to dollars.
